(On Pain)
黃帝問(wèn)于少俞日:筋骨之強(qiáng)弱，肌肉之堅(jiān)脆，皮膚之厚薄，腠理之疏密，各不同，其于針石火炳之痛何如?腸胃之厚薄堅(jiān)脆亦不等，其于毒藥何如?愿盡聞之。少俞曰:人之骨強(qiáng)、筋弱[《甲乙》卷六第十一“弱”作“勁”]、肉緩、皮膚厚者耐痛，其于針石之痛、火焫亦然。
Yellow Emperor asked Shaoyu and said: "In human body, there are the differences in the toughness and fragility in the tendons and the bones, there are the differences of the firmness and crispness in the muscle, there are the differences of the thickness and thinness in the skin and there are the differences in the looseness and denseness in the striae. What are the conditions of the pain when they receive the treatments of acupuncture, stone needle and moxibustion? There are also the differences of the thickness and thinness, firmness and crispness in the intestine and stomach, what are the responses to the stimulations when they are treated with toxic drugs? I hope to hear the details." Shaoyu said:"When a man has a strong bone, tough tendon, soft muscle and thick skin, he is capable to endure pain, and he can also endure the pain from the treatment of acupuncture, stone needle and moxibustion."
黃帝日:其耐火焫[焫:《甲乙》卷六第十一作“執(zhí)”]者，何以知之?少俞答曰:加以黑色而美骨者，耐火焫。黃帝日:其不耐針石之痛者，何以知之?少俞曰:堅(jiān)肉薄皮者，不耐針石之痛，于火焫亦然。
Yellow Emperor asked: "Some people can endure the pain of the moxa cauterization and how can one know it?" Shaoyu said: "People of black skin and strong skeleton can withstand the moxa cauterization." Yellow Emperor asked: "Some people can not withstand the pain of needling and how can one know it?" Shaoyu said: "People with firm muscle and thin skin can not withstand the pain of the acupuncture treatment, and he can not withstand the pain of moxibustion also."
黃帝曰:人之病，或[或:此字誤衍]同時(shí)而傷，或易已，或難已，其故何如?少俞曰:同時(shí)而傷，其身多熱者易已，多寒者難已。
Yellow Emperor asked:"When people contract disease simultaneously, some of them can be recovered easily and some of them can hardly be recovered and what is the reason?" Shaoyu said: "For the disease contracted simultaneously, people with plenty heat can be recovered easily, and people with plenty of cold can hardly be recovered."
黃帝曰:人之勝毒，何以知之?少俞曰:胃厚、色黑、大骨及[及:《甲乙》卷六第十一作“肉”]肥者，皆勝毒;故其瘦而薄胃[薄胃:此應(yīng)乙作“胃薄”]者，皆不勝毒也。
Yellow Emperor asked:"Some people can sustain toxic drugs and how can one know it?" Shaoyu said:"When one has thick stomach, black skin, large bone and fleshy muscle, he can sustain the toxic drugs; when one is thin and has weak stomach, he can hardly sustain toxic drugs."
