兩者均是指美國地區(qū)（或地方，即district)的檢察官。其區(qū)別在于United States attorney是指由總統(tǒng)任命lawyer，在刑事 (或民事）案件中代表聯(lián)邦政府在聯(lián)邦司法地區(qū)（federal judicial district)進行檢控或擔任其他職責，其也稱為United States District Attorney，故譯為“美國聯(lián)邦地方檢察官”。而district attorney 則指經(jīng)任命或選舉的公共官員，代表州政府在特定的司法地區(qū)在刑事案件中作檢控，故譯為“州地方檢察官”（a public official appointed or elected to represented the state in criminal cases in a particular judicial district [2])，也稱為 public prosecutor、 state's attorney、prosecuting attorney 等。

實際上，在美國，檢察官的通用詞為public prosecutor，其分為聯(lián)邦和州兩個體系，聯(lián)邦系統(tǒng)的prosecutor稱為United States attorney，而州體系的則稱為district attorney；而“檢察長”則稱為 Attorney General，也分為州檢察長（attorney general of a state)和聯(lián)邦政府的檢察長（Attorney general of the United States)。目前有些法律詞典只將district attorney簡單譯為：（美） 地方檢察官（又譯：地區(qū)檢察官）[3]，容易使讀者將該術(shù)語誤認為是“聯(lián)邦地方檢察官”。

在英國及威爾士，警方起prosecutor的作用，可用information提起刑事指控，其行為應在檢察長的咨詢意見（advise)下進行；此外政府各部門或地方當局內(nèi)的司法機構(gòu)也可進行檢控(...many thousands of cases yearly are instituted by government departments and local authorities who have their own legal departments )。檢察長稱為 director of public prosecutions，其一般由資歷在10年的沙律師或巴律師擔任，由內(nèi)政大臣（appointed by the Home Secretary)任命，負責決定對疑難或嚴重犯罪的刑事指控，受制于總檢察長（Barrister General)或副總檢察長（Solicitor General)。
