Yellow Emperor said to Qibo: "I am told there is the so called five-contraindication in pricking, what is the meaning of it?" Qibo said: "It means some parts of the body must not be pricked in the five days of contraindication." Yellow Emperor said:"I am told in pricking, there is the so called five-depletion." Yellow Emperor said: "It means one should avoid to purge by pricking the five kinds of diseases of which the refined energy is deficient." Yellow Emperor said: "I am told in pricking, there is the so called five-excessiveness." Qibo said:"It means one must not purge or invigorate by pricking excessively." Qibo said:"It means the five kinds of syndrome which are contrary to the pulse conditions, and it is called the five-adverseness." Yellow Emperor said: "I am told in pricking, there is the so called nine-appropriatness." Qibo said:"When one understands thoroughly and follows the principle of the nine kinds of needle, it is called the nine-appropriateness."
Yellow Emperor asked: "What are the five contraindications? I hope to know on what day one must not treat by pricking. " Qibo said: "In the days of Jia and Yi,do not prick the head, nor to prick the inside part of the ear by applying the 'Fameng pricking method' (pricking the Tinggong point at noon). In the days of Bing and Ding, do not apply the 'Zhen-ai pricking method' (pricking the Tianrong and Lianquan points) on the shoulder and the throat. In the days of Wu and Ji and the days of Chen, Xu, Chou and Wei, do not prick the abdomen, nor to apply the 'Quzhao pricking method' (removing water with the sword-shaped needle) to purge the water. In the days of Ren and Gui, do not prick the leg. These are the so called five contraindications."
Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the five depletions?" Qibo said:"When one has protracted disease and his muscle is very thin, it is the first kind of depletion; when the patient has suffered from massive hemorrhage, it is the second kind of depletion; when the patient has excessive sweating, it is the third kind of depletion; when the patient has severe diarthea, it is the fourth kind of depletion; when the parturient woman has just delivered a child or after massive hemorrhage, it is the fifth kind of depletion. One must not treat by purging to the patients with these five depletions."
Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the five adverseness?" Qibo said:"When the patient has fever but his pulse condition is calm, or when the patient has perspiration but his pulse condition is irritating, it is the first kind of adverseness; when the patient has diarrhea but his pulse condition is full and gigantic, it is the second kind of adverseness; when the patient has protracted localized arthralgia and his protruding muscles in the elbow and the knee are broken and have ulcerations, has fever in the body but his pulse condition tends to be severing, it is the third kind of adverseness; when the patient has intestinal bi-syndrome, nocturnal emission, emaciation of the body, pale and dark in the complexion, red and black blood clots occur in the stool and the disease condition is quite serious, it is the fourth kind of adverseness; when the patient has fever and thin body but his pulse condition is firm and vigorous, it is the fifth kind of adverseness."
