黃帝日:夫人之忍痛與不忍痛者，非勇怯之分也。夫勇士之不忍痛者，見難則前，見痛則止;夫怯士之忍痛者，聞難則恐，遇痛不動。夫勇士之忍痛者，見難不恐，遇痛不動;夫怯士之不忍痛者，見難與痛，目轉(zhuǎn)面[面:劉校云:“詳文義應改為“而”]盼，恐不能言，失氣驚，顏色變化[化:周本，日記本并作“更”]，乍死乍生。余見其然也，不知其何由，愿聞其故。少俞日:夫忍痛與不忍痛者，皮膚之薄厚，肌肉之堅脆緩急之分也，非勇怯之謂也。
Yellow Emperor said: "Some people can endure pain and some can not, and they are not distinguished by bravery and timidity. Some of the brave men can not endure pain, they stride bravely forward before difficulty, but stop when they encounter pain; some timid people can endure pain, they are afraid of difficulty, but they can remain unmoved perseivingly when encountering pain. As to the brave men who can endure pain, they are not afraid of difficulty and they can remain unmoved when encourtering pain as well; for the timid ones who can not endure pain, when they encounter the difficulty and pain, they only turn their eyes, stare angrily but dare not speak, they hold their breath, become startling, pale and harbouring all sorts of misgivings. I have seen all these conditions, but I don't know the reason, and I hope you can tell me. " Shaoyu said: "Concerning the ability of enduring pain, it is due to whether the skin is thick or thin and whether the muscle is firm or crisp, loose or tight in different people, it can not be explained by bravery and timidity."
黃帝日:愿聞勇怯之所由然。少俞日:勇士者，目深以固，長衡[衡:與注本，張注本并作“沖”]直揚，三焦理橫，其心端直，其肝大以堅，其膽滿以傍，怒則氣盛而胸張，肝舉而膽橫，眥裂而目揚，毛起而面蒼，此勇士之由然者也。
Yellow Emperor said: "I hope to know what causes the difference of bravery and timidity." Shaoyu said:"For a brave man, his eyeballs are bogging deeply, his eyesight is firm when seeing things, his eyebrows are long and erecting, the textures of his muscle are coarse and striate, his heart is normal, his liver is large and firm, his gallbladder is full with bile and the bile is intense, when he gets angry, his breath is plenty and his chest is expanding, his gallbladder is horizontal when his liver is lifted, his eyesockets are busting and his eyes are flashing, his hairs are standing up and he has green complexion. These are the reasons of why he is a brave man."
黃帝日:愿聞怯士之所由然。少俞日:怯士者，目大而不減，陰陽相失，其焦理縱，髑骺短而小，肝系緩，其膽不滿而縱，腸胃挺，脅下空，雖方大怒，氣不能滿其胸，肝肺雖舉，氣衰復下，故不能久怒，此怯士之所由然者也。
Yellow Emperor said: "I hope to know the conditions of a timid man." Shaoyu said:"For a timid man, his eyes are large but not bogging deeply, he often turns his eyes with fright, the textures of his muscle are loose and flaccid, his sternal xiphoid prccess is short and small, his liver is small and the bile in his gallbladder is not full and lacking, his intestine and stomach are rather straight with less curves, the locations under his ribs are empty, his liver energy is not substantial, when he is in a rage, his energy of anger can not fill his chest, even when the energies of the liver and the gallbladder rush up, they will fall into decline immediately, as his energy is deficient, he can hardly sustain the anger long. These are the reasons why he is a timid man."
黃帝曰:怯士之得酒，怒不避勇士者，何藏使然?少俞曰:酒者，水谷之精，熟谷之液也，其氣僳悍，其入于胃中，則胃脹，氣上逆，滿于胸中，肝浮膽橫。當是之時，固[固:統(tǒng)本金陵本并作“同”]比于勇士，氣衰則悔。與勇士同類，不知避[避:統(tǒng)本作“為”]之，名曰酒悖也。
Yellow Emperor said:"When a timid man has drunk the spirit, his condition is about the same with a brave man when he gets angry, which one of the viscera causes it?"Shaoyu said:"The spirit is the essence of the water and cereals, and the property of the juice fluid of the matured cereals is light and swift, when it enters into the stomach, it will cause distention of the stomach, besides, it will cause the energy of the gallbladder to run amuck. By this time, the timid man seems similar with the brave man, but when he recovers from drunkenness, he will regret. A timid man is similar with a brave man after drunken, but the knows not what to do, it is called perplexion after drunken."
