有人昨晚深夜問了我一句話如何翻譯（劃線處）：
我把這句話完整打出來：
remembering was like writing, with experience the pen and the mind the blank page.
前半句應該比較容易——remembering was like writing，意為“記憶就像寫作”。
后半句“with experience the pen and the mind the blank page”，估計很多人只知道它是個 with 結(jié)構(gòu)，但里面的成分可能就搞不清楚了。
其實這是個獨立主格結(jié)構(gòu)，這里的 with 可加可不加，不加也對——experience the pen and the mind the blank page。
獨立主格和狀語最大的區(qū)別是，獨立主格的前半部分是名詞或名詞短語，后半部分是一個非謂語成分（可以是分詞短語、介詞短語、形容詞短語、甚至是名詞短語等）。
但做狀語就是一個分詞短語、介詞短語、形容詞短語等。
比如：He sit there, eyes closed.（他坐在那里，眼睛閉著）。
eyes closed 就是一個獨立主格，因為 eye（眼睛）是名詞，closed 是 形容詞（閉著的），而這個名詞和形容詞之間是主表關系。
對了，eyes closed 前面可加 with 也可不加 with，這個無所謂。
再來看一個獨立主格的例子：
He stood there, fist his only weapon. （他站在那邊，拳頭是他唯一的武器）。
fist his only weapon 比較特殊，前半部分的 fist 是名詞，后半部分的 his only weapon 是一個名詞短語，前面的名詞和后面的名詞短語也構(gòu)成主表關系。這也是獨立主格哦！
再來看一個狀語的情況：
He sit there, humming softly to himself.（他坐在那邊，輕輕地哼著曲）。
humming softly to himself 只是一個現(xiàn)在分詞短語，所以是狀語（表伴隨）。
搞清楚兩者的關系，我們再回到原句：
...remembering was like writing, with experience the pen and the mind the blank page.
后半段with 可有可無，我們把它拿掉：
...remembering was like writing, experience the pen and the mind the blank page.
experience the pen and the mind the blank page 就是一個獨立主格，而且這個獨立主格是由兩個小的獨立主格的并列，分別是：
experience the pen 和 the mind the blank page
參考前面舉過的例子：fist his only weapon（拳頭是他唯一的武器）。
那么experience the pen表示“經(jīng)歷是筆”，the mind the blank page表示“大腦是白紙”，結(jié)合主干句 remembering was like writing（記憶像寫作），那么整句話的意思呼之欲出了：
remembering was like writing, with experience the pen and the mind the blank page.
記憶就像寫作，人們以經(jīng)歷作筆，在似白紙的頭腦中進行書寫。
