(The Exquisite Meaning of Six Energies)

黃帝問曰:鳴呼!遠(yuǎn)哉，天之道也，如迎浮云，若視深淵，視深淵尚可測，迎浮云莫知其極，夫子數(shù)言謹(jǐn)奉天道，余聞而藏之，心私異之，不知其所謂也。愿夫子溢志盡言其事，令終不滅，久而不絕，天之道可得聞乎?岐伯稽首再拜對日:明乎哉問，天之道也!此因天之序，盛衰之時(shí)也。

Yellow Emperor asked:"Alas! How profound is the principle of heaven: It is like the floating cloud above, and the deep abyss below. One can measure the abyss but can by no means to know the extent of the floating cloud. You have said many times that one should abide by the principle of heaven carefully, and I have kept what you said in mind, but I am

still doubtful as I do not know its reason. I hope you can tell me in detail, so that it may not be lost and can be handed down for a long time. Now, can I hear the details about the principle of heaven from you?" Qibo bowed again and again and said: "What a brilliaint question you have asked! This is the so called the principle of heaven is the prosperity and decline displayed in time sequence by the natural changes."

帝曰:愿聞天道六六之節(jié)盛衰何也?岐伯曰:上下有位，左右有紀(jì)。故少陽之右，陽明治之;陽明之右，太陽治之;太陽之右，厥陰治之;厥陰之右，少陰治之;少陰之右，太陰治之;太陰之右，少陽治之。此所謂氣之標(biāo)，蓋南面而待也。故日:因天之序，盛衰之時(shí)，移光定位，正立而待之，此之謂也。

Yellow Emperor said:"I hope to hear the reasons of the prosperity and decline in time sequence of the six sixty days (a year)."

Qibo said:"There are the regular positions for the six dominating energies above and below. and there are certain rule in situating in the right and left. So, on the right side of Shaoyang, Yangming is taking charge; on the right side of Yangming, Taiyang is taking charge: on the right side of Taiyang, Jueyin is taking charge; on the right side of Jueyin, Shaoyin is taking charge; on the right side of Shaoyin, Taiyin is taking charge; on the right side of Taiyin, Shaoyang is taking charge. These are the branches of the three Yins and the three Yangs, and one should observe it when facing south. The prosperity and decline of the time sequence of the nature can be determined by surveying the shifting of the sun's shadow."

Controlling heaven, affecting earth, left side and right side are the proper terms in the theory of the five elements' motion and the six kinds of weather variations which indicate the six energies dominationg upwards, downwards, left and right. The meaning of upwards and downwards is the heaven and earth, the meaning of left and right is the time. Controlling heaven indicates dominating the heaven energy. and affecting earth indicates dominating the earth energy. In a year、 the energy of controlling heaven dominates in the first half of the year, and the energy of affecting earth dominates in the second half of the year. Besides the energies of controlling heaven and affecting earth、 the other four energies are the intermediate energies which are on the left and right sides. The six steps which are turning left step by step show each one of the six energies dominates alternately the seasons of the year. The initial energy (the first energy) begins from the solar term of Great cold and ends in the terminal energy (the sixth energy), each energy takes up two months, and six energies take up the period of a year. In the sequence of circulating, the energies of controlling heaven and affecting earth are the primary energies. On the left side of the affecting earth energy,it is the initial energy. such as, when Shaoyin is controlling the heaven, then, Yangming is affecting the earth, and the left side of Yangming will be Taiyang which is the initial energy. On the left side of Taiyang is Jueyin which is the second energy: on the left side of Jueyin is Shaoyin which is the third energy: on the left side of Shaoyin is Taiyin which is the fourth energy, on the left side of Taiyin is Shaoyang which is the fifth energy: on the left side of Shaoyang is

Yangming which is the terminal energy. These are the circulating sequences of the six energies in dominating.
