天元紀(jì)大論篇/Tian Yuan Ji Da Lun
(The Yin and Yang of the Five Elements Motion and the Six Kinds of Weather as the Guiding Principles of the Universe)
黃帝問曰:天有五行,御五位,以生寒、暑、燥、濕、風(fēng)。人有五藏,化五氣,以生喜、怒、思、憂、恐。論言五行相襲而皆治之,終期之日,周而復(fù)始,余已知之矣,愿聞其與三陰三陽之候奈何合之?
Yellow Emperor asked: "The five elements of the nature associate with the five orientations of east, west, south, north and the centrality to produce the weathers of cold, heat, dryness, wetness and wind. The five viscera of man activate the vital energy to produce the five emotions of overjoy, anger, melancholy, anxiety and terror. In the chapter of the《Six Cycles of Sixty Days and the States of Viscera》states that the energy of the element's motion which dominates the days of the year one after another is in a definite sequence, it completes its cycle on the last day of the year and then begins to start again. I have known the contents, but I hope to know how the five elements motion coincide with the six energies, ie., the three energies of Yin and the three energies of Yang?"
鬼臾區(qū)稽首再拜對日:昭乎哉問也。夫五運陰陽者,天地之道也,萬物之綱紀(jì),變化之父母,生殺之本始,神用之府也,可不通乎!故物生謂之化,物極謂之變,陰陽不測謂之神,神用無方謂之圣。夫變化之為用也,在天為玄,在人為道,在地為化,化生五味,道生智,玄生神。神在天為風(fēng),在地為木;在天為熱,在地為火;在天為濕,在地為土;在天為燥,在地為金;在天為寒,在地為水。故在天為氣,在地成形,形氣相感而化生萬物矣。然天地者,萬物之上下也,左右者,陰陽之道路也,水火者,陰陽之徵兆也,金木者,生成之終始也。氣有多少,形有盛衰,上下相召,而損益彰矣。
Gui Yuqu cupped his hands, bowed again and again and said:"What an explicit question you have asked. The Yin and Yang of the five elements motion is the law of the universe, the guiding principle of all things, the source of various variations, the base of growth and injuryv and the supreme headquater of the spiritual activities, could it be said that it should not be understood thoroughly?
"The growth of all things is called the Transformation, when the growth developes into its extreme stage, it is called the change, when the change of Yin and Yang becomes unanticipated, it is called Divinity, when the property of the divinity is changing constantly, it is sacred. As to the functioning of the changeful divinity, in heaven, it is the universe which is profound and can hardly be inferred, in man, it is the penetrating principle, and on earth, it is the growth and developement of all things. As the earth promotes growth and developement, it produces the five tastes for nourishing all things; when a man understands the penetrating principle, it produces the wisdom; when the heaven is elusive, it produces divinity.
"In the variation of the divinity, in heaven, it is wind, on earth, itis wood; in heaven it is heat, on earth it is fire; in heaven it is wetness, on earth it is earth; in heaven it is dryness, on earth it is metal; in heaven it is cold, on earth it is water. In a word, in heaven, they are the shapeless six kinds of weather, and on earth, they are the shaped five elements. When the elements and the weathers responding with each other, it causes the growth and developement of all things.
"Therefore, the heaven and earth are the limits for all things to rise and fall the left and right are the routes for Yin and Yang to ascend and descend, the water and fire are the manifestations of Yin and Yang, and the spring and autumn are the beginning and the terminal of growth and harvesting. There is differential in plenty and few of the energy, and there is diversity in overabundance and deficiency of the five elements, when the shaped elements and the shapeless energies inspiring each other, the phenomenon of having a surplus and insufficiency will become apparent."
帝曰:愿聞五運之主時也何如?鬼臾區(qū)曰:五氣運行,各終期日,非獨主時也。帝曰:請聞[守校本“聞”作“問”]其所謂也。鬼臾區(qū)曰:臣積[“積。疑作“稽”]考《太始天元冊》文曰:太虛廖廓,肇基化元,萬物資始,五運終天,布?xì)庹骒`,總統(tǒng)坤元,九星懸朗,七曜周旋,曰陰曰陽,曰柔曰剛,幽顯既位,寒暑馳張,生生化化,品物咸章。臣斯十世,此之謂也。
Yellow Emperor said: "I hope to know how the five elements motion control the condition of the four seasons". Gui Yuqu said:"The five elements motion take turns to control the year's seasons and days, they are not controlling the four seasons merely."
Yellow Emperor said: "I hope you can tell me the reason about it." Gui Yuqu said:" I have read the ancient book of the (Primordial Universe) in which stated: The primordial energy in the spacious sky is the foundation of generation, and the growth and developement of all things depend on it. As the five elements motion are having their regular patterns, the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn and winter are formed. The refined energy of heaven and earth spreads extensively and controls all things in the universe, so, the nine stars illuminate above and the seven celestial bodies (sun, moon and the five planets) are revolving around, through which the distinction of Yin and Yang and the different properties of firmness and mildness can be distinguished. Due to the proper operation of Yin and Yang, the coming and going of the four seasons and the shifting of day and night, all things can grow and develope and become prosperous. This proposition has heen handed down in my family for ten generations."
