我們要介紹的最后一個前綴with-又是英語本族語前綴，其原意是against；此外又引出away，back等意思。至于with-相當(dāng)于介詞with的用法，則是現(xiàn)代英語中才有的。以with-開頭的派生詞為數(shù)不多。這里只介紹最常用的幾個。

withstand [ with- = against 相對；stand v. 站立→]v. stand against; resist; endure 抵擋，頂住；反抗；忍受 / Explorers have to withstand hardships. 探險家要頂?shù)米∑D難險阻。

withdraw [ with- = away or back 回，離；draw v. 拉→]v. draw back; draw away 收回；撤回；撤退；撤銷 / He agreed to withdraw the charge of theft if you return the money. 如果你將錢歸還，他同意撤回對你的盜竊的起訴。

withdrawal n. 收回；撤回；撤退；撤銷

withhold [ with- = back 回；hold v. 保持→]v. ① hold back；keep back 抑制；阻止 / The dam broke as it was too weak to withhold the pressure of the rising water. 堤壩決口了，因為它不夠堅固，頂不住河水上漲的壓力。②refuse to give不給，扣留/ There will be no whale hunting because the government withholds permits. 不可能去捕鯨了，因為政府拒絕發(fā)給許可證。 

withholder n. 抑制者；抑制因素

within [ with- = with 與；in= inside 內(nèi)部→“along with the inside 與內(nèi)部相連prep.① in the inner part of; inside of 在…里面；在…內(nèi)部 / By the use of X rays, doctors can see within the body. 利用X光射線，醫(yī)生能看到人體內(nèi)部。②inside the limits of; not beyond 在…范圍內(nèi)；不超過/The task is within your power. 這任務(wù)是你力所能及的。
