中國人在進(jìn)行漢英翻譯時，常愛用一些表示動作或狀態(tài)的短語。其實(shí)在很多情況下，副詞完全可以代替短語，不但表達(dá)準(zhǔn)確， 而且行文簡煉。在翻譯中醫(yī)時，我們尤其應(yīng)注意這個問題。例如:
1. 先天之精氣依賴于腎藏精的生理功能而發(fā)揮效應(yīng)；水谷之精氣依賴于脾胃的運(yùn)化功能而化生。
The congenital essence depends on the renal function of storing essence to exert effect，while the cereal essence depends on the splenogastric functions of transformation to generate.
譯文說明：
根據(jù)上下文的邏輯關(guān)系，后一個depend on用一個on代替就可以了。
2. 氣實(shí)者，熱也；氣虛者，寒也。
The sthenia of qi is caused by heat； the asthenia of qi is caused by cold.
譯文說明：
同例1 一樣，后一個caused by可用by來代替，這樣整個譯文就簡潔了。
3. 血在脈中循行，內(nèi)至臟腑，外達(dá)皮肉筋骨，如環(huán)無端，運(yùn)行不息.
The blood is circulated in the vessels, it reaches the viscera in the interior and skin, muscles, tendons and bones in the exterior. It is like a cycle without end and circulates forever.
譯文說明：
in the interior 可用 interiorly 來代替，in the exterior 可用 exteriorly 來代替?！叭绛h(huán)無端，運(yùn)行不息”譯作in a continuous cycle 即可，不必字字對譯。過分質(zhì)直的翻譯不但不經(jīng)濟(jì)，而且不合文法。
4. 津液有滋潤和濡養(yǎng)人體組織器官的生理功能。
The body fluid has the physiological functions of moisturizing and nourishing human tissues and organs.
譯文說明：
“生理功能”可用副詞physiologically來翻譯，functions可省略掉。另外根據(jù)上下文的邏輯關(guān)系，human—詞也可省略掉。這樣整個譯文可改為：
Physiologically， the body fluid moisturizes and nourishes all tissues and organs.
5. 在病理情況下，血和津液之間也多相互影響。
Under pathological circumstances, blood and body fluid often affect each other.
譯文說明：
under pathological circumstances 這個短語可用 pathologically這個副詞來代替，從而使譯文簡潔而明快。
