在科技英語文章中，常有用一個(gè)名詞詞組（表示動(dòng)作意義的名詞+of +名詞+修飾語）代替，一個(gè)句子意思的情況。也就是說，在普通英語中用動(dòng)詞表示的內(nèi)容，科技英語中常用名詞表達(dá)。這種名詞詞組稱為名詞化結(jié)構(gòu)。例如普通英語中的這樣一句話：
1) If machines are tested by this method, there will be some loss of power.
在科技英語中就會(huì)表達(dá)為：
2) The testing of machines by this method entails some loss of power.
用這種方法試驗(yàn)機(jī)器，會(huì)浪費(fèi)一些能量。
這種名詞化結(jié)構(gòu)，文字明了、用詞簡(jiǎn)潔、結(jié)構(gòu)緊湊、表意客觀，且信息容量大，在很多情況下可以省卻過多的主謂結(jié)構(gòu)，所以科技作者往往樂意使用它們。以下的四個(gè)句子就是這種情況。
3) In recent years concern has been growing over the pollution of the atmosphere by oxides of sulphur and nitrogen.
近年來.硫和氮的氧化物對(duì)大氣的污染已引起人們?nèi)?益深切的關(guān)注。（名詞化結(jié)構(gòu)在句中作介詞賓語）
4) The substitution of rolling friction for sliding friction results in a very considerable reduction in friction.
用滾動(dòng)摩擦代替滑動(dòng)摩擦，可以大幅度地減少摩擦力。 (名詞化結(jié)構(gòu)在句中作主語）
5) According to the doctor, continued exposure of the eye to light of great intensity would cause loss of sight.
按照醫(yī)生的說法，眼睛持續(xù)暴露在強(qiáng)光中會(huì)導(dǎo)致失明。(名詞化結(jié)構(gòu)在句中作主語）
