4) Contract Clauses
When the relative pronoun in a defining clause is in the objective case, it is often omitted, especially in spoken English. Clauses like these in which the relative pronouns are omitted, are sometimes called contract clauses. Sometimes the relative adverb can also be omitted. e.g.
The cruise (that) my mother took last winter greatly benefited her health.
Mechanical motion is the simplest form of motion (which) we meet with.
The first time (when) I was personally introduced to lightning, I was flying between Peurto Rico and the American continent.
II. Prepositional Phrases
The prepositional phrases are by far the most common type of postmodifier in English.
Prepostional phrases can often be related to relative clauses. e.g.
All passengers on board the ship had to pass a medical examination.
=All passengers who were on board the ship had to pass a medical examination.

后置修飾語出現(xiàn)在名詞或名詞短語后邊，有以下幾種：

例：他的主要論點(diǎn)——科學(xué)定律沒有例外——被認(rèn)為是有問題的。

例：地震把地球弄皺的時(shí)刻到了。（時(shí)間從句）在每一種作功的場合，都有兩件事發(fā)生；1）力的作用；2）在該力作用下某物發(fā)生位移。（地點(diǎn)從句）這與你讀書時(shí)眼睛移動(dòng)的方式一樣。（方式從句） 這就是運(yùn)動(dòng)物體具有能量的原因。（原因從句）
6. 副詞
例：這里的條件很差。
7. 形容詞
例：這臺(tái)電機(jī)出了毛病。
在以上所有后置修飾語中，定語從句、非限定分句和介詞短語是在科技英語作品中用得較多的。
I. 定語從句
定語從句是通過指向上文的成分（通常為關(guān)系代詞）把其同主句的部分或整個(gè)主句聯(lián)系起來的副句。定語從句的主要功用是用作名詞或名詞詞組的后置修飾語，其中的關(guān)系代詞指前面的先行詞。
1) 限定性定語從句
請(qǐng)看下面的句子：
a.栽荷引起拉應(yīng)力。b.載荷要把物體拉開。
如果這兩句中的名詞指的是同一個(gè)東西，那么，我們就可利用定語從句把它們結(jié)合成一個(gè)句子：
c. 要把物體拉開的栽荷引起拉應(yīng)力。
在c句中，定語從句是整個(gè)句子意思的一個(gè)必要的組成部分，要是把它略去的話，句子的意思就不完整了。
“which”從句對(duì)先行詞加以定義，陚予它確定的含義。這類從句即稱為限定性定語從句。
