(The Branch and Root and the Transfering Sequence of the Disease)

黃帝向曰:病有標(biāo)本，刺有逆從奈何?岐伯對(duì)日:凡刺之方，必別陰陽，前后相應(yīng)，逆從得施，標(biāo)本相移，故日:有其在標(biāo)而求之于標(biāo)，有其在本而求之于本，有其在本而求之于標(biāo)，有其在標(biāo)而求之于本，故治有取標(biāo)而得者，有取本而得者，有逆取而得者，有從取而得者，故知逆與從，正行無問[吳注本“問”作“間”]，知標(biāo)本者，萬舉萬當(dāng)，不知標(biāo)本、是謂妄行。

Yellow Emperor asked: "In diseases, some belong to the branch and some belong to the root; in pricking, sometimes, the regular treating is applied, and sometimes, the adverse treating is applied, and what is the reason?"

Qibo said:"Generally, in pricking, one must distinguish whether the disease belongs to Yin or Yang, and integrate the early stage and the latter stage of the disease first, and then determine whether the agreeable or adverse treating should be applied, Thus, to some of the diseases of branch, their branches are treated, to some of the diseases of root, their roots are treated; to some of the diseases of root, its branches are treated and to some of the diseases

of branch, their roots are treated. Among the treatings, some are effective when treating the branch, some are effective when treating the root; some are effective when applying the agreeable treating, and some are effective when applying the adverse treating. Therefore, when one knows the principle of the agreeable and adverse treating, he can set his mind at ease in treating without misgiving, when one knows the principle of treating the diseases of

branch and root, he will be sure to succeed and can cure the patient repeatedly. If one knows not the principle of branch and root of the disease, he can only treat wantonly.

夫陰陽，逆從，標(biāo)本之為道也，小而大，言一而知百病之害。少而多，淺而博，可以言一而知百也。以淺而知深，察近而知遠(yuǎn)，言標(biāo)與本，易而勿及。

"The principle of Yin and Yang, regular and adverse treating, and branch and root of the disease enables one to understand whether the disease is slight or severe, causes one to know the harms of various diseases by commencing from a certain point, besides, it enables one to know more about the disease from knowing only a little, to inspect the disease in an extensive scope instead of from a limited scope, to comprehend various diseases by inferring

one disease, from the grasping the superficial knowledge to the profound knowledge, and to know what is afar by inspecting the near. The principle of branch and root can be understood easily, but it is hard to be carried out.

治反為逆，治得為從。先病而后逆者治其本;先逆而后病者治其本;先寒而后生病者治其本;先病而后生寒者治其本;先熱而后生病者治其本;先熱而后生中滿者治其標(biāo)[《靈樞?病本》“熱”作“病”，滑壽說:“此句當(dāng)作‘先病而后生熱者治其標(biāo)’”]先病而后生寒者治其本;先病而后泄者治其本;先泄而后生他病者治其本;必且調(diào)之，乃治其他病;先病而后先中滿[金本，胡本，趙本吳本“先中滿”并作“生中滿”，明抄二“而后”下無“先”字]者治其標(biāo);先中滿而后煩心者治其本。人有客氣，有同[林校引全本“同”作“固”]氣。小大不利治其標(biāo);小大利治其本;病發(fā)而有余，本而標(biāo)之，先治其本，后治其標(biāo);病發(fā)而不足，標(biāo)而本之，先治其標(biāo)，后治其本。謹(jǐn)察間甚，以意調(diào)之，間者并行，甚者獨(dú)行。先小大不利而后生病者治其本[明抄本，明抄二“先小大不利”十三字移上“小大利治其本”句下]。

"When treating adversely, it is the reverse treating, when the treating is in an routine way, it is the agreeable treating.

When the disharmony of energy and blood is caused by a certain disease, the disease is the root, and the disease should be treated first; when the disease is caused by the disharmony of energy and blood, the disharmony of energy and blood is the root, and the energy and blood should be treated first.

"When the cold-evil is contracted first, and then other disease occurs, then the cold-evil is the root which should be treated first, when other disease is contracted first, and then the cold-evil occurs, then the other disease is the root which should be treated first.

"When the patient contracts heat-evil first, and then other disease occurs, then the heat-evil is the root which should be treated first; when the other disease is contracted first and then the heat-evil occurs, the branch which is the heat-evil should be treated first.

"When the patient contracts other disease first and then the diarrhea occurs, treat the root which is the other disease first; when the patient has diarrhea first and then other disease occurs, treat the root which is the diarrhea and adjust the stomach first, and then treat the other disease.

"When other disease is contracted first and then the abdominal flatulence occurs, the branch which is the abdominal flatulence should be treated first: when the abdominal flatulence is contracted first, and then the irritation of heart occurs, treat the root which is the abdominal flatulence first.

In the human body, there exists the evil-energy and the healthy energy.

"When other disease is contracted first and then the retention of feces and urine occur, the branch which is the retention of feces and urine should he treated first; if there is no retention of feces and dysuria, the root which is the disease contracted first should be treated first.

"When the disease is sthenic, it shows the evil-energy is having a surplus, the root which is the evil-energy should be treated first, and then adjust the healthy energy. when the disease is asthenic, it shows the healthy energy is insufficient, the branch which is the healthy energy should be supported first, and then treat the evil-energy.

Before treating, inspect carefully whether the disease is a slight one or a severe one, and then adjust it accordingly. when the disease is a slight one. the therapy of supporting the healthy energy and the therapy of eliminating the evil energy can be carried on at the same time; when the disease is a severe one, treat first the branch or the root according to its specific condition. If the retension of feces and urine occurs first and then the other disease occurs, treat the retension of feces and urine which is the root first.
