五常政大論篇/Wu Chang Zheng Da Lun
(On the Energies of the Five Elements' Motion)
黃帝問日:太虛寥廓,五運(yùn)迥薄,衰盛不同,損益相從,愿聞平氣何如而名?何如而紀(jì)也?岐伯對(duì)日:岐伯對(duì)日:昭乎哉問也!木曰敷和,火日升明,土曰備化,金日審平,水日靜順。
Yellow Emperpr asked: 'The sky is spacious and boundless, and the five elements' motion circulates swiftly and unceasingly. As there are the different conditions of prosperity and declination, its injury and benefit to human body are varied. I hope to hear how to nominate and distinguish the moderate energies of the five elements' motion." Qibo said:" What an explicit question you have asked. When the wood energy is moderate, it spread harmony and softness, and it is called the 'Spreading Harmony'; when the fire energy is moderate, it ascends and becomes bright, and it is called the 'Ascending Brightness'; when the earth energy is moderate, it spreads the energies of growth and transformation extensively to all things, and it is called the 'Extensive Activation of Energy'; when the metal energy is moderate, it is refreshing but not restraining hard and it is called the 'Cautious Punishment'; when the water energy is moderate, it is calm and fluent, and it is called the 'Calm and Agreeable'."
帝日:其不及奈何?岐伯日:木日委和,火曰伏明,土日卑監(jiān),金日從革,水曰涸流。帝日:太過何謂?岐伯日:木日發(fā)生,火曰赫曦,土日敦阜,金日?qǐng)?jiān)成,水日流衍。
Yellow Emperor asked:"What are the conditions when they are insufficient?" Qibo said: "when the wood energy is insufficient, it is tortuous without the harmonious energy of Yang, and it is called 'Disharmony'; when the fire energy is insufficient, it hides without illuminating, and it is called 'Hiding Light'; when the earth energy is insufficient, it lies low whithout promoting growth and transformation, and it is called 'Descending Low'; when the energy of metal is insufficient, it is like leather without the energy of firmness, and it is called 'Leather-like'; when the energy of water is insufficient, it is dry without the energy of moisture, and it is called 'Drying Flow'."
Yellow Emperor asked: "What are conditions when they are excessive?" Qibo said: "when the wood energy is excessive, the growth and transformation of all things will come in advance, and it is called 'Early Generation'; when the energy of fire is excessive, the flaming of fire will be very strong, and it is called the 'Conspicious Flame'; when the energy of earth is excessive, it is high and thick, and it is called 'High and Thick'; when the energy of metal is excessive, it will be very hard, and it is called 'Firm and Blocked'; when the energy of water is excessive, it will be overflowing, and it is called the 'Flooding'."
帝曰:三氣之紀(jì),愿聞其候。岐伯曰:悉乎哉問也!敷和之紀(jì),木德周行,陽(yáng)舒陰布,五化宜乎,其氣端,其性隨,其用曲直,其化生榮,其類草木,其政發(fā)散,其候溫和,其令風(fēng),其藏肝,肝其畏清,其主目,其谷麻,其果李,其實(shí)核,其應(yīng)春,其蟲毛,其畜犬,其色蒼,其養(yǎng)筋,其病里急支滿,其味酸,其音角,其物中堅(jiān),其數(shù)八。
Yellow Emperor asked: "what are the symbols of the moderate, insufficient and excessive energies and how to distinguish them?" Qibo said: "How exhaustive your question is. The symbol of 'spreading Harmony' which is the moderate energy of wood is prevailing all around causing the Yang energy to relax, the Yin energy to spread and cause the activities of energy of the five elements' motion to become unimpeded and moderate. The moderate energy of wood is upright; its property is agreeable to the transformation of all things; its variation is crooked or straight; its ability of promoting growth and transformation is to cause all things to become prosperous; it subordinates to the grass and wood kind; its function is difussion, its symptom is mildness; its manifestation is the wind; its corresponding viscus of a man is the liver. The liver wood is afraid of the lung metal and the liver associates to the eyes. In crops, it is the fiber crops; in kinds of fruit, it is the plum; in the parts of fruit, it is the kernel; in seasons, it is spring; in worms, it is the caterpillar; in animals, it is the dog; in colours, it is dark-green; its refined energy nourishes the tendon; in diseases, they are the tenesmus and the abdominal distention; in the five tastes, it is sourness; in the five tones, it is the Jue; in substances, it is of the firm kind; in the accomplishing number in the mystic diagram, it is eight.
升明之紀(jì),正陽(yáng)而治,德施周普,五化均衡,其氣高,其性速,其用燔灼,其化蕃茂,其類火,其政明曜,其候炎暑,其令熱,其藏心,心其畏寒,其主舌,其谷表,其果杏,其實(shí)絡(luò),其應(yīng)夏,其蟲羽,其畜馬,其色赤,其養(yǎng)血,其病胸瘛,其昧苦,其音微,其物脈,其數(shù)七。
"The symbol of 'Ascending Brightness' which is the moderate energy of fire is the universal implementing of the decree of fire causing the activities of the five-element energy to develope in a balanced way. The moderate energy of fire is ascending; its property is swift in moving: its affect is scorching and burning heat; its ability of promoting growth is to cause all things to become flourishing : in categories, it belongs to fire; its function is to illuminate light: in weathers, it is the hot summer its authority of office is to implement the decree of heat: in viscus, it is the heart, and the heart is afraid of the kidney water: in human body, it associates with the tongue; in the five crops. it is the wheat: in the kinds of fruit, it is the apricot: in the parts of fruit, it is the sponge: in seasons, it is the summer: in worms, it is the flying insect; in animals, it is the horse; in colours, it is red; its refined energy nourishes the blood; in diseases, it is the bouncing and spasm of the muscle; in the five tastes, it is the bitterness: in the five tones, it is Zhi; in substances, it belongs to the channel and collateral kind: its accomplishing number in the mystic diagram is seven.
