帝日:何謂三部?岐伯日:有下部，有中部，有上部，部各有三候，三候者，有天有地有人也，必指而導(dǎo)之，乃以為真。上部天[“上部天至下部人，足太陰也”]，兩額之動(dòng)脈;上部地，兩頰之動(dòng)脈;上部人，耳前之動(dòng)脈。中部天，手太陰也;中部地，手陽(yáng)明也;中部人，手少陰也。下部天，足厥陰也;下部地，足少陰也;下部人，足太陰也。故下部之天以候肝，地以候腎，人以候脾胃之氣。

Yellow Emperor asked: "What are the three parts?" Qibo said: "The three parts are the lower part, the middle part and the upper part, and each of them has three sub-parts which are represented by heaven, earth and man respectively, and one can only understand them with the instruction of others.

The upper part of heaven represents the arteries of the two sides of the forehead, the upper part of earth represents the arteries of the two cheeks, the upper part of man represents the arteries of the two ears; the middle part of heaven is Hand Taiyin, the middle part of earth is Hand Yangming, the middle part of man is Hand Shaoyin; the lower part of heaven is Foot Jueyin, the lower part of earth is Foot Shaoyin, the lower part of man is Foot Taiyin.

"The heaven sub-part of the lower part can be used to diagnose the energy of liver, the earth sub-part of the lower part can be used to diagnose the energy of kidney, and the man sub-part of the lower part can be used to diagnose the stomach and spleen."

帝曰:中部之候奈何?歧伯日:亦有天，亦有地，亦有人。天以候肺，地以候胸中之氣，人以候心。帝日:上部以何候之?岐伯日:亦有天，亦有地，亦有人。天以候頭角之氣，地以候口齒之氣，人以候耳目之氣。三部者，各有天，各有地，各有人，三而成天，三而成地，三而成人，三而三之，合則為九，九分為九野，九野為九藏。故神藏五，形藏四，合為九藏。五藏已敗，其色必天，夭必死矣。

Yellow Emperor asked:"What is the condition of the upper part?" Qibo said: "There are also three sub-parts in the upper part. The heaven sub-part of the upper part can be used to diagnose the energy of the corner of the forehead, the earth sub-part of the upper part can be used to diagnose the energies of the mouth and teeth, the man sub-part of the upper part can be used to diagnose the energies of the ears and eyes.

"In a word, in each of the three parts, there are heaven, earth and man respectively; there are three sub-parts of heaven, three sub-parts of earth and three sub-parts of man. Three times three, there are all together nine sub-parts. The nine sub-parts of pulse correspond to the nine prefectures of earth. and the nine prefectures correspond to the nine organs of man.ie., the five spirit-storing organs of liver, lung, heart, spleen and kidney and the four substantial-storing organs of stomach, large intestine, small intestine and bladder. If the five viscera decline, the complexion will be withered and dark, and the patient will die."
