(The Relation Between the Weather Change of Eight Main Solar Terms and the Purging and Invigorating by Acupuncture)

黃帝問日:用針之服，必有法則焉，今何法何則?岐伯對日:法天則[“天則”明抄本作“則天”]地，合以天光。

Yellow Emperor asked:"The technique of acupuncture must have some specific rules. What are the rules then?" Qibo said:"One can only study and realize then by following the pattern of heaven, earth, Yin and Yang and the celestial bodies of the sun, moon and stars."

帝日:愿卒聞之。岐伯日:凡刺之法，必候日月星辰四時八正之氣，氣定乃刺之。是故天溫日明，則人血淖液而衛(wèi)氣浮，故血易寫，氣易行;天寒日陰，則人血凝泣[《太素》“凝”作“涘”，《云笈七簽》引“泣”作“沍”]而衛(wèi)氣沉。月始生則血氣始精，衛(wèi)氣始行; 月郭滿，則血氣實[《太素》“實”作“盛”]，肌肉堅;月郭空，則肌肉減，經(jīng)絡(luò)虛，衛(wèi)氣去，形獨居。是以因天時而調(diào)血氣也。是以天[《甲乙》“天”作“大”下“天溫”同]寒無刺，天溫?zé)o疑[《針炙大成》卷二《標幽賦》楊注引“疑”作“灸”]。月生無寫，月滿無補，月郭空無治，是謂得時而調(diào)之。因天之序，盛虛之時，移光定位，正立而待之故日:月生而寫，是謂藏虛;月滿而補，血氣揚[《移精變氣論》王注引“揚”作“盈”]溢，絡(luò)有留血，命日重實;月郭空而治，是謂亂經(jīng)。陰陽相錯，真邪不別，沈以留止，外虛內(nèi)亂，淫邪乃起。

"Yellow Emperor said: "I hope you can tell me in detail." Qibo said: "Generally, one must examine the energies of the eight main solar terms (the spring equinox, the autumnal equinox, the summer solistice, the winter solistice, the beginning of spring, the beginning of summer, the beginning of autumn and the beginning of winter) and prick after the energy is stabilized.

"If the weather is fine, and the sun is shining bright, the blood of the body will be moist and the Wei-energy will be abundant; if the weather is cold and cloudy, the blood circulation will be dull and stagnated, and the energy will be sunken and hiding. When the moon is newly appeared, the blood and energy of man begin to generate in the wake of it, and the Wei-energy starts to operate with it: when the moon is full, the blood and energy of man will be prosperous and his muscle will be firm and substantial; when the moon is dark, the muscle of man will become emaciated, by this time, his channel and collaterals become asthenic, his Wei-energy is gone, and his body is left all alone. Therefore, when pricking, one must adjust the blood and energy along with the condition of heaven.

"Thus, do not prick when the weather is too cold; do not treat with moxibustion when the weather is too warm; do not apply purging therapy when the moon is newly appeared; do not apply invigoration therapy when the moon is full; do not treat at all when the moon is dark: and this is the so called the capability of adjusting the energy and blood according to the condition of heaven. One should ascertain the location of the energy according to the moving sequence of the season and the abundant or decline status of blood and energy of a man, and wait attentively for the optimum opportunity for treating.

"If purge is applied when the moon is newly appeared, it is called the 'double asthenia'; when pricking is applied when the moon is dark,-will disturb the channel-energy, and it is called the 'channel confusion'. These maltreatments will cause the disorder of Yin and Yang, confusing of the healthy and the evil-energy, retention of the evils, as a result the syndrome of outer asthenia of the collateral and inner confusion of the channel will occur, and the evil-energy will take advantage to invade. "

帝曰:星辰八正何候?

Yellow Emperor said: "What do the stars, eight main solar terms and the four seasons verify?

岐伯曰:星辰者，所以制日月之行也;八正者，所以候八風(fēng)之虛邪以時至者也;四時者，所以分春秋冬夏之氣所在，以時調(diào)之也，八正之虛邪，而避之勿犯也。以身之虛，而逢天之虛，兩虛相感，其氣至骨，入則傷五藏，工候救之，弗能傷也，故曰天忌不可不知也。

Qibo said:"When examining the bearings of the star, it can determine the regular pattern of the abiding route of the sun and moon: when examining the alternation of the regular energies of the eight main solar terms, it can determine the arrival time of the disease which is invaded by the eight winds: when examining the four seasons,it can determine the location of the energies of spring, summer, autumn and winter; when one measures the evil-energy of the eight main solar terms according to the time sequence and try to evade it, the invasion of evil-energy can be avoided. When one is asthenic and being invaded by asthenic evil-energy, the double asthenia will cause the evil-energy to invade the bone. If the physician understands the effects of the weather change and rescue in time, the patient may not be seriously hurt. Otherwise, the evil-energy will penatrate deep into the viscera. Thus, it is neccessary for one to understand the time abstentions associated with heaven."
