五個單詞均有“虐待”或“濫用”的含義。其中，abuse 為最常用，可指所有誹鎊中傷或有害言詞或行為，不管是否是故意，常用于濫用特權(quán)、權(quán)力、法律程序、毒品以及虐待兒童、婦女等[1] ，如 A policeman abusing his authority by searching the house without a warrant。maltreatment 和 mistreatment 十分近義， 均指有卑劣動機的行為。相比之下，mistreatment的虐待程度較 maltreatment輕，且其不一定具有身體上的虐待或故意傷害[2]; 而maltreatment則通常以精神上的虐待為主[3]。persecution多指因種族、宗教或信仰等原因而施加的迫害或虐待[4]。wrong主要指在無正當理由或原因的情況下受到不公正或有害的待遇，或自己的權(quán)利受到侵犯[5]。
