以上兩者均有驗尸人員之含義。coroner源于英格蘭，指一公共官員，其可為醫(yī)生、律師或其他司法人員，對因暴力或有疑義之突然死亡原因進行調查（whose duty is to investigate the causes and circumstances of any death that occurs suddenly, suspiciously ,or violently)，以往幾乎所有的詞典均將coroner譯為“驗尸官”[1]，此種翻譯很不準確。首先，驗尸必定包括解剖尸體等，其必定是法醫(yī)或至少是醫(yī)生的職責，但coroner多不是醫(yī)生；其次，coroner的責任也決非只是檢驗尸體[2]。故筆者建議將其譯為“死因調查員”（香港將其譯為“死因裁判官”[3])，與其相應的coroner's court 也就應為“死因調查法庭”而非以往的“驗尸官法庭”。medical examiner也為公共官員，負責對有疑點的死亡原因進行調查，包括決定是否必要和進行尸檢等，故其才是“驗尸體官”[4]，美國很多州現已用后者替代了前者[5]。
