out-是英語本族語固有的派生詞綴，其基本意思就是out。在構(gòu)詞中，out-有兩種意思：它能與名詞或形容詞結(jié)合，起修飾作用， 表示 out或outside等意思；它還可以附在動詞、名詞及某些形容詞前面，分別表示more than, to surpass和be more than等意思。注意，在這兩種情況下，out-都有可能改變詞基單詞的詞性。

下面先介紹out-用于第一種意思的例子。 

outburst [out- = out 外；burst n. 突發(fā)→] n. a burst out 突然爆發(fā) / There comes an outburst of cheers from the audience. 觀眾突然發(fā)出一陣歡呼。

outcry [ out- = out 出;cry n. 哭→]n. a cry out; sudden cry or scream 喊叫；吶喊 / The burglar warned her to make no outcry. 強盜警告她不許叫喊。

outbuilding [ out- = outside 在外；building n. 建筑物→]n. building built outside or near the main building 外層 / Barns are outbuildings on a farm.在農(nóng)場中谷倉是建在住房外頭的。

outdoor [ out- = outside 在外；door n. 門戶→]a. outside of houses; in the open air 戶外的；露天的 / Outdoor games will make you healthy. 室外活動使人身體健康。

outdoors ad. 在戶外；在野外

outgoing [out- = out 出;going a. 進行的→] a. going out; departing 往外去的；出發(fā)的 / All the outgoing letters should be examined. 所有發(fā)出的信件均要經(jīng)過檢查。

outstanding [ out- = out 出；standing a. 站立的] a. standing out from others; well-known 杰出的，顯著的 / He is an outstanding baseball pitcher because of his control.他是個杰出的棒球投球手，因為他控球好。
