前綴extra-來自拉丁介副詞extra ,原意為outside(在…之外）， 在構(gòu)詞中引申出beyond(超出）等意思。它主要出現(xiàn)在拉丁借詞之中，而這些借詞的詞干大多數(shù)成為英語中單獨作用的單詞。在現(xiàn)代英語中，也可以作派生前綴，一般加在形容詞之前，起修飾性的作用。下面舉幾個代表性的例子說明extra-的用法。

extracurricular [extra- = outside 在…之外;curricular a. 課程的=>“outside what is curricular 在課程之外的 ”→]a. outside the regular course of study 課外的 / Football, dramatics and debating are extracurricular activities in the school. 足球，戲劇與辨論都 屬該校的課外活動。
