for-是英語古已有之的前綴，原意是forth。在古英語中，它曾是相當(dāng)活躍的動(dòng)詞性詞綴?？墒牵F(xiàn)在由for-構(gòu)成的常見的派生詞不多，for-的含義也不大明顯。大體上說，for-只與英語單詞結(jié)合， 主要表示away的意思。下面舉幾個(gè)常用的詞例，請(qǐng)注意for-在構(gòu)詞中的含義。

forbear [ for- = away 離;bear v .忍受=>“bear away from sth.忍受與某物相離”→]v . keep from doing; hold back避免;克制/I forbore telling her the truth because I knew it would upset her. 我克制自己沒將實(shí)情告訴她，我知道那會(huì)使她不安的。

forbearance n .忍耐，克制

forbid [for- = away 離；bid v. 命令=>“to command sb. away from sth. 命令某人與某事相離”→]v. not allow; prohibit; ban 不許；禁止/ The teacher forbade us to leave our seats.老師不許我們離開座位。

forbidding a. 可怕的，令人生畏的

forget [ for- = away 離；get v. 變得=>“to get away from the mind 離開心中 ”→]v. let go out of the mind; fail to remember 忘，忘記 / He forgot the poem which he had memorized.他忘了原先記住的那首詩。

forgetful a. 健忘的；疏忽的 

forgettable a. 易被忘記的；可以忘記的

forgive [ for- = away 離;give v. 給予=>“to give away (a punishment) 放棄懲罰”→]v. give up the wish to punish; pardon 寬??；原諒 / She forgave her brother for breaking her doll. 她原諒她弟弟弄壞了她的玩具娃娃。

forgiveness n. 饒怒，寬恕 

forgiving a. 寬大的，仁慈的

forswear [ for- = away 離; swear v. 發(fā)誓→“swear away from doing sth.發(fā)誓不干某事”→]v. swear to give up發(fā)誓擯棄/ The coach asked the team to forswear smoking. 教練要求全隊(duì)立誓戒煙。
