跟 out-，over-一樣，under-也是英語本族語的前綴，它的前身就是能充當(dāng)介詞、形容詞與副詞的under。派生前綴under-的基本意思主要有三種：under or beneath (在…之處）；lower (低于 …）；not enough (不足）。under-用于前兩種意思時(shí)，只跟名詞和動(dòng)詞綴合；用于第三種意思時(shí)只與動(dòng)詞與形容詞結(jié)合。應(yīng)注意， 與名詞結(jié)合時(shí)，可能改變?cè)~基單詞的詞性。

下面針對(duì)的不同含義分別舉例說明。

underground [ under- = under or beneath 在之下;ground n. 地面→]I ad. beneath the surface of the ground 在地下 / Miners work underground. 礦工在地底下工作。II a. being beneath the surface of the ground 地下的/Underground railways play an important role in the modern cities.地下鐵道在現(xiàn)代城市里起著重要作用。

underwear [ under- = under 在…之處；wear n. 衣服→] n. clothes worn under the outer garments, especially next to the skin [總稱]內(nèi)衣，襯衣，貼身衣 / She bought some underwear at the winter sales. 她在冬季大拍賣中買了一些廉價(jià)的內(nèi)衣。

underline [ under- = under 在…下面; line v. 用線標(biāo)示→] v. draw a line under 在…下面劃線 / In writing, we underline titles of books. 在寫作時(shí)，我們?cè)谟嘘P(guān)書名下劃一條線。

understand [ under- =在…下面 ; stand v. 站立=>“stand under what is expected to learn站在希望學(xué)到的目標(biāo)之下”→]v. grasp the meaning of; know well 理解；熟悉 / Now I understand the teacher’s question. 現(xiàn)在我理解老師提的問題了。
