分清主從是理清原文結(jié)構(gòu)，擬出譯文整體框架的關(guān)鍵，而辨析詞義是確保譯文準(zhǔn)確的前提。不少考生也能理解譯文的大致意思，卻組織不好譯文，不是拖泥帶水就是丟三拉四，其主要問題在于沒能分清主從，不能從整體上把握原文結(jié)構(gòu)。

請看這樣一例英語翻譯試題：

It is hard to believe that automobiles, radios, motion pictures, frozen foods, electric refrigerator, to mention only a few items, have come into common use within thirty years.

主體結(jié)構(gòu)：It is hard to believe that…（這簡直令人難以置信）

賓語從句中: automobiles, radios, motion pictures, frozen foods, electric refrigerator have come into common use（汽車、無線電、電影、速凍食品、電冰箱已經(jīng)進(jìn)入普遍使用）

時間狀語 :within thirty years (在30年之內(nèi))

插入語: to mention only a few items (僅提及幾件東西)

翻譯分析處理：此句比較棘手的是形式主語It和插入語: to mention only a few items的翻譯。為了符合漢語的表達(dá)習(xí)慣，可以考慮將插入語前置，另起一句。經(jīng)過句子結(jié)構(gòu)分析、詞語翻譯和詞序調(diào)整，我們便可將此句譯成通順的漢語了。

譯文：且舉幾件東西來說吧，汽車、無線電、電影、速凍食品、電冰箱，這些東西在過去的30年中得到了廣泛的應(yīng)用，這簡直令人難以置信。

1. 抓主謂結(jié)構(gòu)

這是理清原文結(jié)構(gòu)，搭建譯文整體框架的關(guān)鍵。譬如下面這樣一道題：

考題實例：Pearson has pieced together the work of hundreds of researchers around the world to produce a unique millennium technology calendar that gives the latest dates when we can expect hundreds of key breakthroughs and discoveries to take place. （2001）

此句中的主、謂、賓結(jié)構(gòu)為：Pearson has pieced together the work of hundreds of researchers around the world；皮爾森匯集了世界各地數(shù)百位研究人員的成果；

目的狀語為：to produce a unique millennium technology calendar（用以）編制一個獨特的新技術(shù)千年歷；

兩個定語從句分別為：calendar that gives the latest dates列出了最遲日期的千年歷，和the latest dates when we can expect hundreds of key breakthroughs and discoveries to take place我們可以期待的數(shù)百項重大突破和發(fā)現(xiàn)的最遲日期（知道它們何時將會發(fā)生）。

進(jìn)行上述結(jié)構(gòu)分析之后，我們便可以順著原文的語序來翻譯出此句：

皮爾森匯集世界各地數(shù)百位研究人員的成果，編制了一個獨特的新技術(shù)千年歷，歷中列出了人們可望看到的數(shù)百項重大突破和發(fā)現(xiàn)的最遲日期。

再如下面一例：

考題實例：The role of natural selection in evolution was formulated only a little more than 100 years ago, and the selective role of the environment in shaping and maintaining the behavior of the individual is only beginning to be recognized and studied.（2002） 

此句為由連詞and連接而成的并列句，其并列主謂結(jié)構(gòu)為：The role of natural selection…was formulated …, and the selective role of …is only beginning to …自然選擇的作用被闡明，而選擇作用則剛剛開始……。其余成分分別為定語和狀語。其中in shaping and maintaining the behavior of the individual為the selective role的狀語。經(jīng)過結(jié)構(gòu)分析、調(diào)整，我們可得出以下譯文：

自然選擇在進(jìn)化中的作用僅在100多年前才得以闡明，而環(huán)境在塑造和保持個體行為時的選擇作用則剛剛開始被認(rèn)識和研究。

 

2. 抓關(guān)鍵信息

由于句式結(jié)構(gòu)的復(fù)雜多變，有時候僅僅抓住了原文的主謂結(jié)構(gòu)還不夠，還需抓住時間、地點、人物、事件等關(guān)鍵信息。請看這樣一例：

As the clock crept toward 11: 15 p. m. last Thursday, the 500 scientists and engineers packed into the control room and an adjacent auditorium at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory kept their eyes riveted on a bank of computer monitors.

原文主、謂、賓結(jié)構(gòu)為the 500 scientists and engineers …kept their eyes riveted on….（500名科學(xué)家和工程師……把目光聚集到……）抓住原文的時間、地點、人物、事件等關(guān)鍵信息，于是便有了如下譯文：

上星期四，當(dāng)時針悄悄地指向晚上11：15的時候，500名科學(xué)家和工程師坐滿了普林斯頓等離子體物理實驗室控制室和毗連的禮堂。他們不約而同地把目光聚集到一排計算機監(jiān)視器上，焦急地等待著。

再看下面一例：

Views of the railings where doomed passengers and crew members stood evoked images of the moonless night 74 years ago when the great ship slipped beneath the waves.

主、謂、賓結(jié)構(gòu)為：Views evoked images（景象喚起了想象）

漢語中同樣沒有英語上述表達(dá)方式，一般不把非人稱的名詞用作行為主語。抓住原文的時間、地點、人物、事件等關(guān)鍵信息，便可形成如下譯文：

看到那些欄桿，不由使人想起七十四年前這艘巨輪船體傾斜沉入波濤的那個暗無星月的夜晚，當(dāng)時那些慘遭厄運的乘客和船員也曾站在這些欄桿旁。

 

3. 抓邏輯關(guān)系

在很多情況下，注意原文的邏輯關(guān)系能保證譯文的層次清楚，結(jié)構(gòu)有條不紊。如Titanic中的最后一句：

The stern, which settled on the bottom almost 1,800 ft. from the bow, had swiveled 180°on its way down.

其主謂結(jié)構(gòu)為：The stern … had swiveled 180° 船尾旋轉(zhuǎn)了一百八十度

如按照原文的語序譯為“在海底離船頭幾乎有一千八百英尺遠(yuǎn)的船尾在下沉?xí)r旋轉(zhuǎn)了一百八十度”，既不符合漢語的按時間地點的先后順序，又十分拗口。在這種情況下，不妨另起一句，使譯文層次清楚：

船尾在下沉?xí)r旋轉(zhuǎn)了一百八十度，在海底離船頭幾乎有一千八百英尺遠(yuǎn)。

再看下面一例：

The isolation of the rural world because of distance and the lack of transport facilities is compounded by the paucity of the information media.

其主謂結(jié)構(gòu)為：The isolation … is compounded by… （隔絕狀態(tài)被……合成）

此句英語原文中的主謂結(jié)構(gòu)和被動語態(tài)都不符合漢語的表達(dá)習(xí)慣。對于這樣的情況，我們最好按句子的邏輯關(guān)系，分層次逐步展開：

因為距離遠(yuǎn)，又缺乏交通工具，農(nóng)村社會是于外界隔絕的。這種隔絕狀態(tài)，由于通訊工具不足，就變得更加嚴(yán)重了。
