但有些復(fù)合名詞詞組雖然表層結(jié)構(gòu)與NP + PP相同，但深層結(jié)構(gòu)和語義關(guān)系卻不一樣。翻譯時不能任意按以上結(jié)構(gòu)譯出。如：
Our eye is sensitive only to a narrow range of wavelengths between 0.4 and 0.7 microns.
我們的眼睛只能感受到0.4?0.7微米狹窄范圍之內(nèi)的波長。
這里的復(fù)合名詞詞組不能譯成“波長在0.4?0.7微米之間的狹窄范圍”， 因為“……眼睛……感受……范圍”在語義上不如“眼睛……感受……范圍內(nèi)的物體”搭配合理。從表層結(jié)構(gòu)上看，這里的a narrow range of相當(dāng)于ー個限定詞，它所限定的詞是of后面的名詞。這種限定詞的功能與漢語的量詞相當(dāng)。英語中這樣的詞很多，翻譯時要注意。例如：
a beam of ordinary light —束普通光
a number of reasons 一些理由
a large amount of heat energy 大量熱能
a high degree of similarity 高度（的）相似性
但是，這里冠詞的改變，也會引起意思變化。如：
the number of reasons 理由的條數(shù)
the amount of heat 熱能（的）量
the degree of similarity 相似的程度
當(dāng)中心詞是抽象名詞或由動詞轉(zhuǎn)變來的名詞時，復(fù)合名詞詞組的處理還應(yīng)注意要適當(dāng)增詞。例如：
Although aluminum has a great affinity for oxygen, its corrosion-resistance is relatively high.鋁對氧雖然有很大的親合力，但其抗腐濁性能較強。
復(fù)合名詞詞組結(jié)構(gòu)繁簡不一，翻譯技巧也會各不相同。如：
A general description is given of a waler supply system now under construction in the area east of Toulon comprising pipes between 450mm and 1 250mm in diameter totalling a length of approximately 30kms operating ar pressure of 20-30 bans over two-thirds of their run.
在遇到這種復(fù)雜的結(jié)構(gòu)時，首先應(yīng)該弄清各成分間的句法關(guān)系，然后根據(jù)漢語習(xí)慣，按語義恰當(dāng)?shù)刈g出。如：
本文對土倫東部正在建設(shè)的供水系統(tǒng)作了一般的介紹。該系統(tǒng)是由直徑 450--1250mm的水管組成，總長近30公里，其流程2/3以上的工作壓カ為 20--30 巴。
