Yellow Emperor asked: "Is the carbuncle which causes many injuries to the patient can hardly be cured?" Qibo said: "It is according to the condition whether the syndrome is an agreeable or an adverse one." Yellow Emperor said: "I hope to hear about the conditions of the agreeable and adverse syndromes." Qibo said: "There are five kinds of adverse syndrome in the carbuncle: When the white of the eye is green and dark and the eye is small, they are the adverse syndromes of the first kind; when the patient vomits after administering the medicine, it is the adveres syndrome of the second kind; when the patient is painful and very thirsty, they are the adverse syndromes of the third kind; when the patient finds difficulty in turning his shoulder and neck, it is the adverse syndrome of the fourth kind; when the voice of the patient is hoarse and ghastly pale in the complexion, they are the adverse syndromes of the fifth kind. All other syndromes besides the adverse syndromes are the agreeable syndromes."
Yellow Emperor asked: "In the various diseases, there are all the agreeable and adverse syndromes, can I hear about them?" Qibo said: "When one has abdominal distention, hot feeling in the body and the small pulse condition, they are the adverse syndromes of the first kind; when one has borborygmus in the abdomen and has abdominal distention, cool in the extremities. diarrhea and gigantic pulse condition, they are the adverse syndromes of the second kind; when one has unceasing epistaxis and gigantic pulse condition, they are the adverse syndromes of the third kind; when one has cough, hematuria, emaciation of the muscle and tiny and urgent pulse condition, they are the adverse syndromes of the fourth kind; when one has cough, emaciation of the body, hotness in the body and tiny and rapid pulse condition, they are the adverse syndromes of the fifth kind. When one contracts these syndromes, he will die within fifteen days.
"When one's abdomen is large and distending, his four extremities are cool, his body is emaciated and has severe diarrhea, they are the adverse syndromes of the first kind; when one has abdominal distention and fullness, hematochezia, gigantic and intermittent pulse condition, they are the adverse syndromes of the second kind; when one has cough, hematuria, emaciation, strong respond to the fingers when palpating the pulse, they are the adverse syndromes of the third kind; when one has hematemesis, fullness and oppression of the chest to affect the back, and has tiny and rapid pulse condition, they are the adverse syndromes of the fourth kind; when one has cough and vomiting, abdominal distention, diarrhea and the hidden and severing pulse condition, they are the adverse syndromes of the fifth kind. When these syndromes occur, the patient will die within one day. When a physician pricks rashly disregarding these dangerous appearances, it is called the adverse treating."
Yellow Emperor said: "As you have said the functions of the needle are tremendous, it can approach the astronomical phenomena above, follow the geographical environment below. In human body, there are the differences of the five solid organs inside, and the orderly arrangement of the six hollow organs outside, the twenty eight channels are having their strict usual practice of circulation. Sometimes, one can only treat the patient by pricking with the needle, but he can not bring back the patient's life, can you alter the situation?" Qibo said:"When one treats in an improper way, it can cause death of the patient and can not bring back his life." Yellow Emperor said: "Your saying is not tally with humanity, I hope to hear the reasons of it so that one may not prick the patient rashly. " Qibo said: "The reason is quite explicit and it will have an inevitable result. When one is not keen in applying the needle, it is like using a sword to kill a man, or make one to become drunken with spirit. Through the anology above, one can understand the reasons without diagnosing."
Yellow Emperor said: "I hope to hear the details." Qibo said:"The refined energy of a man depends on the supply of the cereals, and the cereals are gathered in the stomach. The stomach is the sea of the water, cereals, energy and blood. When the sea water evaporates, it descends to become the clouds and rain which are spreading in the sky, and likewise, the energy and blood which are converted and generated from the stomach circulate along the channels. The channels are the large collaterals of the five solid organs and the'six hollow organs."
Yellow Emperor asked:"When pricking the hand and foot channels above and below, is there any contraindication?"Qibo said:"When one purges by pricking the Wuli point against the direction of the channel energy errorneously, the visceral energy will stop by the halfway of its operation. The visceral energy can only arrive for five times, if the pricking to a certain viscus is erroneous for five times, the energy of the said viscus will be exhausted, since the total arrivals of the five visceral energy before exhausting are twenty five, so, when the times of the erroneous pricking are twenty five, all the visceral energies in the five viscera will be exhausted and the patient will die. It is not the needle that causes the patient's death, but it is due to the ignorance of the one who pricks, and his not knowing the acupuncture contraindications." Yellow Emperor said: "I hope to hear the details." Qibo said: "When one pricks rashly, if the pricking is shallow, the patient will die when he arrives home; if the pricking is deep, he will die in the hall of the physician." Yellow Emperor said: "The principle you have said is excellent, and the reasons are quite explicit. I will carve them on a plate of jade and take it as a valuable treasure, I will hand it down to the later generations as the acupuncture contraindications so that people may not violate the rule."
