(Matters Needing Attention in Acupuncture)


黃帝問日:余聞九針九篇,夫子乃因而九之,九九八十一篇,余盡通其意矣。經(jīng)言氣之盛衰,左右傾移,以上調(diào)下,以左調(diào)右,有余不足,補瀉于滎輸,余知之矣。此皆榮衛(wèi)之[《太素》“之”下有“氣”字]傾移,虛實之所生,非邪氣從外入于經(jīng)也。余愿聞邪氣之在經(jīng)也,其病人[《濟生拔萃。竇大師流注指要賦》引無“人”字]何如?取之奈何?

Yellow Emperor asked: "I have heard about the nine chapters about the nine methods of acupuncture, and you have deduced them with nine times nine into eighty one chapters, and now I understand all their meanings. From the classics, I have known there is overabundant or deficient of energy, diverse pricking to the right side or to the left, contralateral insertion of pricking the upper part to cure the lower disease and pricking the left side to cure the right, invigorating the deficiency or purging the surplus through the five shu-points. I have known that they are due to the unusual deviations of the Rong and Wei-energies and the asthenia and sthenia, and they are not the result of the invasion of the evil-energy to the channels.  Now I want to know what symptoms will appear when the evil-energy invades the channels from outside, and what is the method in treating them?"


岐伯對日;夫圣人之起度數(shù),必應于天地,故天有宿度,地有經(jīng)水,人有經(jīng)脈,天地溫和,則經(jīng)水安靜;天寒地凍,則經(jīng)水凝泣;天暑地熱,則經(jīng)水沸溢;卒風暴起,則經(jīng)水波涌而隴起。夫邪之入于脈也,寒則血凝泣,暑則氣[《太素》“氣”下有“血”字]淖澤,虛邪因而入客,亦如經(jīng)水之得風也,經(jīng)之動脈[王注所據(jù)本為“經(jīng)脈之動”],其至也亦時隴起,其行于脈中循循然。其至寸口中手也,時大時小,大則邪至,小則平,其行無常處,在陰與陽,不可為度,從而察之,三部九候,卒然逢之,早遏其路,吸則內(nèi)針,無充氣忤;靜以久留,無令邪布;吸則轉(zhuǎn)針,以得氣為故;候呼引針,呼盡乃去;大氣皆出,故命曰寫。

Qibo answered: "The regulations formulated by the sages were certain to conform with the nature. There are three hundred and sixty five degrees and twenty eight constellations in heaven, twelve rivers on earth and twelve channels in man.

"When the heaven and earth are warm, the water in the rivers is calm; when the heaven and earth are cold, the water in the river is stagnated and dull; when the weather is scorching hot, the water in the river is boiled and overflowing: when the violent gale arises, white surges will occur in the river like ridges and furrows.

"When the evil -energy invades the channel, if it is a cold-evil, it will cause the blood to become moist. When the wind-evil invades the channel, it is like water being attacked by wind, and the pulsation of the channel will be also unsmooth like ridges and furrows, when the evil-energy is making trouble in the pulse, it is like a horizontal bar in the front of a car.

"The feeling under the finger in palpation may be some times strong and sometimes weak, when it is strong, it shows the evil-energy is abundant; when it is weak, it shows the evil-energy is calm. When the evil-energy is prevailing, it has no definite position. It can be concealed in Yang, and can be concealed in Yin, which can hardly be estimated. If one wants to examine it, he must follow the proper sequence and trace it by using the method of palpating the three parts and the nine sub-parts of pulse, When inspecting, if the location of the disease is discovered in the three parts and the nine sub-parts of pulse, the evil-energy must be blocked in time by treating.

"In treating, insert the needle when the patient inhales, do not let the energy become adverse when inserting. After insertion, one should wait patiently for the arrival of the energy, and the needle should be retained longer to avoid the despersion of the evil-energy. Twist the needle at the time of the patient's inhalation, so that one may get the desired feeling of acupuncture. Withdraw the needle slowly at the time of the patient's exhalation, and pull it out at the end of the exhalation. In this way. the accumulated energy under the needle will come out thoroughly, and this is the method of purging."


帝曰:不足者補之,奈何?

岐伯日:必先捫而循之,切而散之,推而按之,彈而怒[《難經(jīng)?七十八難》“怒”作“努”]之,抓而下之,通而取之,外引其門,以閉其神。呼盡內(nèi)針,靜以久留,以氣至為故,如待所貴,不知日暮,其氣以至,適而自護,候吸引針,氣不得出,各在其處,推闔其門,令神[《甲乙》“神”作“真”]氣存,大氣留止,故命曰補。

Yellow Emperor asked:"How to invgorate the syndrome of deficiency?" Qibo said:"Feel and touch with hand along the acupoints and press with finger tips to disperse the evil-energy, then push and press the skin, snap the acupoints to make the energy filling up and begin the pricking when the channel-energy has been dredged. After the pulling out of the needle, massage the skin to close the needle hole, so as the healthy-energy may be stored inside. The inserting of the needle should be carried out by the end of the patient's exhalation and retain the needle longer quietly for to get the acupucture feeling. When waiting the arrival of the energy after inserting, one should be attentive like waiting an honorable guest, unawaring the day is dark. When the desired feeling of acupuncture is felt, it should be looked after causiously. Pull out the needle at the time of the patient's inhalation, so that the healthy energy may not be discharged, and this is the method of invigoration."

帝曰:候氣奈何?

Yellow Emperor asked:"How to wait for the energy after insertion?"
