-er是學英語的人最熟悉的派生后綴之一，因此，我們想用盡量少的筆墨介紹這個古英語詞綴?？偟恼f，-er用來表示行為者或與某事物有關(guān)的人，有時也可以表示與某行為有關(guān)的器物。 -er可以跟在兩類詞后面：1)當它與動詞綴合時，表示 a person or thing that?s (做…者;做…物）；2)當它與名詞結(jié)合時，只表示有關(guān)的人，意思有a person who makes or works with?（從事…的人），a person living in ?（住在…的人）；a person who has ?（有 …的人〉。有時-or也可以與形容詞、數(shù)詞、副詞等構(gòu)成相應的名詞。

以下我們各舉一個代表性例子來說明上述用法。

admirer [admir( ←admire) v. 欽佩，贊美；-er→] n. a person who admires 欽佩者，贊賞者 /The film star was surrounded by his admirers.那電影明星被崇拜者團團圍住了。

bomber [bomb v. 轟炸；-er =>“a thing that bombs 轟炸的器物”→] n. an airplane used to bomb 轟炸機 / The bombers flew over the enemy city releasing bombs. 轟炸機飛臨敵方城市上空投下炸彈。

farmer [ farm n. 農(nóng)場，畜牧場； -er =>“a person living in a farm 住在農(nóng)場者”→]n. a person who raises crops or animals on a farm 農(nóng)民；畜牧者 / His father is a farmer with 300 acre land. 他父親是個有300英畝耕地的農(nóng)民。

hatter [hat n. 帽子；~er→] n. a person who makes or sells hats 制帽工人；帽商/ Poisoned by mercury vapour, almost one U.S. hatter in ten developed shakes and mental disturbance. The resulting cliche, mad as a hatter, survives. 由于中了水銀蒸汽的毒，當時美國制帽工中有十分之一得了顫抖與精神失調(diào)癥。 “像制帽工一般瘋狂”這句俗話也就因此產(chǎn)生與流傳下來。

philosopher [philosoph ( ←philosophy) n. 哲學；-er=>“a person who works with philosophy 以哲學為事業(yè)者”→] n. a person who studies philosophy a great deal 哲學家 / Plato, the great Greek philosopher, wrote the famous The Republic. 偉大的希臘哲學家柏拉圖寫了著名的《理想國》。

rancher [ ranch n. 大牧（農(nóng)）場；-er →] n. a person who has or manages a ranch大牧（農(nóng)）場主；大牧（農(nóng)）場管理人/He is a rancher, but he spends most of his time travelling the world. 他是個大牧場主，但是大部分時間都用來周游世界。
