-ite是個(gè)直接來自法語的名詞后綴。它有兩種作用：1)加在名詞后面表示人，這時(shí)，它有an inhabitant of?(…的居民），a descendant of?（…的后代），a follower of?(…的追隨者），a person associated with?(與…有關(guān)的人)等意思。2)加在名詞詞根后面表物，表示 a mineral species (礦物），a fossil (化石）, an explosive (炸藥），a chemical product (化工產(chǎn)品）等意思。

先介紹幾個(gè)由-ite組成的表示人的名詞。

Canaanite [Canaan n. 迦南;-ite→] an inhabitant of Canaan 迦南人 / Canaanites once lived in a region between the Jordon and the Mediterranean. 迦南人過去住在約旦河與地中海之間的地帶。

Israelite [ Isael (Jacob) n. 以色列(即雅各）;-ite=>“a descendant of Israel (Jacob)雅各的后代” →]n. a Jew；a Hebrew 猶太人，希伯來人 / Israelites regarded themselves as chosen by God.猶太人把自己看成是上帝的選民。

Trotskyite [Trotsky n. 托洛斯基；-ite→] n. a follower or supporter of Leon Trotsky 托洛斯基分子 / He was exiled from the country as a Trotskyite and died abroad. 他被作為托洛斯基分子流放國外并死在異國他鄉(xiāng)。

laborite [ labor n. 勞工大眾；-ite=>“ a person associated with labour與勞工大眾有聯(lián)系的人” →]n. a person who supports the interests of workers 勞工派成員 / He is a laborite but not a member of Labour Party. 他是個(gè)勞工派成員但不是工黨黨員。
