復(fù)旦大學(xué)創(chuàng)建于1905年，原名復(fù)旦公學(xué)?！皬?fù)旦” 二字出自《尚書大 傳?虞夏傳》中《卿云歌》之名句“日月光華，旦復(fù)旦兮”。

一個世紀以來，復(fù)旦以其愛國進步、民主科學(xué)的精神積極參與并有力地推進了民族的現(xiàn)代化事業(yè)，并且以其“博學(xué)而篤志，切問而近思”[1] 的治學(xué)態(tài)度鑄造了取精用宏的學(xué)術(shù)思想，陶冶了一代又一代懷抱超曠的才雋學(xué)人，為祖國 的社會主義建設(shè)事業(yè)培養(yǎng)了一大批棟梁之材。

Fudan University was founded in 1905, its original name being Fudan Public School. The phrase“Fudan”，meaning“the morning sun rising again”，can be etymologically traced back to Book of History, the most ancient Chinese book, in which there is such a poetic line: Brilliant is the sunlight and the moonlight, again the morning glory after a night.

Over the past one hundred years, Fudan University, while holding high the banners of patriotism, progress, democracy and science, has played an active role in helping promote China’s modernization drive. The university's motto ilTo pursue a wide scope of learning while sticking to one's chosen aspiration, and to raise.
