There arc affirmative and negative expressions both in English and in Chinese. Some English words, phrases or sentences of affirmative expression may be transformed into Chinese words, phrases or sentences of negative expression, or vice versa.

A.From affirmative into negative(正說反譯）

1.Verbs

(1)If the weather holds a couple of days,the plane will take off.

要是天氣三兩天內(nèi)保持不變，飛機(jī)就起飛。

(2)Such a chance was denied me.

我沒有得到這樣一個機(jī)會。

2. Adverbs

(3) We may safely say so.

我們這樣說萬無一失。

(4) The subversion attempts proved predictably futile.

不出所料，顛覆活動證明無效。

3. Adjectives

(5) It would be most disastrous if even a rumor of it were given

 out.其至只要有一點風(fēng)聲泄漏出去，其結(jié)果就不堪設(shè)想。

(6) His refusal is not final.

他的拒絕并不是不可改變的。

4. prepositions

(7) This problem is above me.

這個問題我不懂（或：我解決不了）。

(8) It was beyond his power to sign such a contract.

他無權(quán)簽訂這種合同。

5. Conjunctions

(9) The guerrillas would fight to death before they surrendered.

游擊隊員寧肯戰(zhàn)死，也不投降。

(10) He'd rather die standing than live kneeling.

他寧肯站著死，也不愿跪著生。

6. Phrases

(11) The islanders found themselves far from ready to fight the 

war.島民們發(fā)現(xiàn)自己遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)沒有做好作戰(zhàn)準(zhǔn)備。

(12) When Philip missed the last bus, he was at a loss to know 

what to do.菲利普誤了最后一班公共汽車，茫然不知該怎么辦。

7. Clauses or sentences

(13) He was 75, but he carried his years lightly.

他七十五歲了，可是并不顯老。

(14) My guess is as good as yours.

我的猜測并不比你高明。

B.From negative into affirmativo(反說正譯）

1. He carelessfy glanced through the note and got away.

他馬馬虎虎地看了看那張便條就走了。

2. Don't luse time in posting this letter.

趕快把這封信寄出去。

3. The significance of these incidents wusn't lost om us.

這些事件引起了我們的重視。
