Good afternoon!
I am delighted to be here to address my fellow university presidents as well as our official guests.
We around the world live in a time of great change. Globalization, the rise of Asia, the critical role of technology as an economic driver, the increasing pace of change in industries and careers, and new knowledge-based economies are reshaping lives around the world.

今天我很榮幸在此向各位校長(zhǎng)同行以及各位領(lǐng)導(dǎo)發(fā)表演講。
全世界都處在一個(gè)大變革的時(shí)代。全球化的趨勢(shì)、亞洲的崛起、技術(shù)在驅(qū)動(dòng)經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展中所起的關(guān)鍵作用、各行各業(yè)變化腳步的加快、新知識(shí)經(jīng)濟(jì)的到來——所有這一切都在改變著世界。
What will the role of universities be in this globalized economy? How will they contribute to improving society through innovation that will improve the quality of life and support economic growth? How will they prepare their graduates who will extract the best and explore the greatest in this increasingly complex society? Most of my remarks will focus on the role of innovation and research in the university since that is the university spirit, as well as the primary source of economic growth and new technologies.
It is important to remember that undergraduate education and post-graduate education are tightly linked to research. Our education programs should ensure that the students are learning in an atmosphere characterized by the pursuit of new knowledge and process of discovery. An interrelated educational program will create a flow of young, bright and uninhibited minds to work on the frontier of discovery. The process of graduation will
disseminate the knowledge of new discoveries and innovations.
在這個(gè)經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化的時(shí)代背景下，大學(xué)將扮演怎樣的角色呢?大學(xué)將如何通過旨在提高生活質(zhì)量、推動(dòng)經(jīng)濟(jì)發(fā)展的創(chuàng)新活動(dòng)進(jìn)而推動(dòng)社會(huì)的進(jìn)步呢？在這個(gè)日新月異、充滿變數(shù)的社會(huì)，大學(xué)又將如何培養(yǎng)那些善于取精用弘的學(xué)生呢?今天我演講的重點(diǎn)是大學(xué)創(chuàng)新與研究的作用，因?yàn)閯?chuàng)新是大學(xué)精神之所在，同時(shí)也是經(jīng)濟(jì)增長(zhǎng)和新技術(shù)產(chǎn)生的主要原因。
我們應(yīng)該認(rèn)識(shí)到，本科生教育和研究生教育都與研究緊密相連。我們的教育應(yīng)該為學(xué)生創(chuàng)造一種可以探尋新知識(shí)、帶來新發(fā)現(xiàn)的氛圍。將教學(xué)與研究融合在一起的教育可以培養(yǎng)一批活躍在探索前沿、聰穎開放的青年才俊。一屆又一屆的大學(xué)畢業(yè)生可以向社會(huì)傳播發(fā)明創(chuàng)造的知識(shí)。
The role of university must be that of the creator of new knowledge and of the promoter of discovery. We must ensure that the benefits of discovery can be transplanted beyond the walls of the academy where they can contribute to the progress of the society. Institutions that provide education at college level have existed for at least 800 years. But research institutions have existed perhaps for only half of that time. Nonetheless the research we performed has grown and changed even more significantly than our teaching mission. It is clear that the
changes are likely to continue.
It's observed many times, especially over the last decade, that universities can be both contributors to the society as well as facilitators for economic growth through the creation of technologies that are exploited in the marketplace.
大學(xué)應(yīng)該發(fā)揮創(chuàng)造新知識(shí)的作用，應(yīng)該發(fā)揮促進(jìn)新發(fā)現(xiàn)的作用。我們應(yīng)該讓新發(fā)現(xiàn)的成果走出研究所，為社會(huì)進(jìn)步做出貢獻(xiàn)。教學(xué)型大學(xué)已有800年的歷史，而研究型大學(xué)只有400年的歷史。盡管如此，大學(xué)在從事研究方面所邁出的步伐遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)領(lǐng)先于教學(xué)，而且很顯然，大學(xué)的研究型發(fā)展趨勢(shì)將持續(xù)下去。
我們一次又一次地看到，尤其在過去的十年里，大學(xué)通過創(chuàng)造出具有市場(chǎng)應(yīng)用價(jià)值的技術(shù)不僅可以造福社會(huì)，而且也可以推動(dòng)經(jīng)濟(jì)增長(zhǎng)。
