四、句間有轉(zhuǎn)折、條件等關(guān)系
相鄰的兩個(gè)英語(yǔ)簡(jiǎn)單句，如在意義上有明顯的或隱含的轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系或條件關(guān)系，或者還有表示轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系的關(guān)聯(lián)詞語(yǔ)，便可合譯成漢語(yǔ)的一個(gè)復(fù)句。試看以下各例：
16) Certain insects live their entire adult life in a day or less. In their immature form such insects may live a total of one to three years.
某些昆蟲(chóng)的成熟期僅一天或不到一天，但未成熟期卻可長(zhǎng)達(dá)一至三年。
17) A shipping and receiving department should not be considered an added operation. Rather, it should be integrated into the processing function.
收料發(fā)貨部門(mén)的工作不應(yīng)該看作是輔助性的工序，相反，它應(yīng)歸并到生產(chǎn)業(yè)務(wù)中去。
18) Probably hydrogen can never be made into a metal. But scientists are considering the possibility.
氫也許永遠(yuǎn)不能變成金屬，但科學(xué)家們卻正在考慮這種可能性。
19) Men have made use of fusion in the terrible hydrogen bomb. But we have been unable to slow down the process enough for any other purpose.
人類已經(jīng)在可怕的氫彈中利用了聚變，但人類還不能把聚變過(guò)程減緩到能用于其它目的。
20) Put an egg into a glass of flesh water. The egg will sink to the bottom of the glass.
如果把一只雞蛋放入一杯淡水中，雞蛋就會(huì)沉到杯底。
五、幾句為同一主語(yǔ)
有時(shí)，英語(yǔ)里前后兩個(gè)或幾個(gè)句子，不僅語(yǔ)義密切相關(guān)，而且主語(yǔ)也是同一個(gè)（后句往往用代詞作主語(yǔ)）。對(duì)這種情況，翻譯時(shí)常要合并譯成一個(gè)句子，并以一個(gè)主語(yǔ)貫穿幾個(gè)分句。這種情況在簡(jiǎn)單句的合譯中比較常見(jiàn)。請(qǐng)看以下各例：
21) This question has puzzled astronomers for many years. It still puzzles them.
多年來(lái)，這個(gè)問(wèn)題一直在困惑著天文學(xué)家，現(xiàn)在仍使他們大惑不解。
22) Sail erosion is a natural physical process. It cannot be prevented.
土壤侵蝕是一種自然的物理過(guò)程，是無(wú)法防止的。
23) The graph of a sine wave appears in Fig.4. This represents one complete cycle or 360o.
圖4為一正弦波曲線，表示一個(gè)完整的周期，即360o。
24) The errors are，depending on their origin, subdivided in different categories. They are as follows.
視原因不同，這些誤差可分為以下幾種類型。
25) Scientists say the hormone insulin can be used to treat heart disease. They say insulin reduces the damage done when the heart fails.
科學(xué)家們指出，荷爾蒙胰島素可用于治療心臟病，減輕由于心臟機(jī)能衰退造成的危害。
這里應(yīng)強(qiáng)調(diào)指出，合句譯法的主要目的是為了使譯文準(zhǔn)確、緊湊，而決不是單單為了節(jié)約文字和篇幅。對(duì)原文中相鄰的兩句話，必須對(duì)其語(yǔ)義關(guān)系和邏輯層次進(jìn)行仔細(xì)分析后才能決定是否要采用合譯法，不可動(dòng)輒采用，以免導(dǎo)致漏譯或誤譯。那種隨意把前后兩個(gè)句子揉合在一起的做法是不可取。
