五閱五使/Wu Yue Wu Shi

(Determining the Conditions of the Five Viscera by Examining the Five Sense Organs)

黃帝向于岐伯日:余聞刺五官五閱，以觀五氣。五氣者，五臟之使也，五時(shí)[五時(shí):按“時(shí)”字誤，應(yīng)作“使”]之副也。愿聞其五使當(dāng)安出?岐伯曰:五官者，五臟之閱也。黃帝曰:愿聞其所出，令可為常。岐伯曰:脈出其于氣口，色見于明堂，五色更出，以應(yīng)五時(shí)[以應(yīng)五時(shí):本句應(yīng)作“以應(yīng)五使”]，各如其常[常:與注本，此張注本作“臟”]，經(jīng)氣入臟，必當(dāng)治里。

Yellow Emperor asked Qibo saying: "I am told in acupuncture, there is the method of examining the colours of complexion of the five sense organs outside for diagnosing the changes of the five viscera inside, the colours of complexion are dispatched by the five viscera, and they are also corresponding with the missions of the five viscera. I hope to hear from where do the five colours of complexion which correspond to the missions of the five viscera reflect?" Qibo said:"The five sense organs are the outer reflection of the five viscera." Yellow Emperor said: "I want to hear the relation between the five sense organs and the changes of the five viscera so that one can use it as the routine for examining the disease." Qibo said:"The pulse condition of the five viscera can be reflected on the Cunkou, the colours of complexion can be reflected on the nose. The changes of the five colours of complexion correspond with the missions of the five viscera and the complexion represents the condition of the related viscus. As to the disease which is penetrated into the inner organ through the channel, the interior should be treated."

帝曰:善。五色獨(dú)決于明堂乎?岐伯曰:五官已辨[辨:張注本作“辯”]，闕庭必張，乃立明堂。明堂廣大，蕃蔽見外，方壁高基，引垂居外，五色乃治，平搏廣大，壽中百歲。見此者，刺之必已，如是之人者，血?dú)庥杏啵∪鈭?jiān)致，故可苦以針。

Yellow Emperor said: "Good. Does the complexion which reflects the visceral condition appears only on the nose?" Qibo said: "If the colours of the five sense organs can be distinguished clearly and the part of the forehead is apparent, then can one make the determination from the observation of the nose. When one's nose is broad and large, his cheeks and the tragus are manifesting outside apparently, his face is square and plump, his gum is protecting the teeth from outside, his five colours of complexion are normal and his five sense organs are open and wide in proper positions, he can live a long life of one hundred years. When treating this kind of people, pricking will certainly be effective. As the energy and blood of people of this kind are having a surplus, and their muscles are substantial and firm, thus, they can be treated by pricking hastily."
