英語(yǔ)中的idioms很多。英語(yǔ)國(guó)家僅諺語(yǔ)詞典就出了許多，每本所收條目少則幾千，多則幾萬(wàn)。這么多的熟語(yǔ)都是英語(yǔ)國(guó)家的人民群眾長(zhǎng)斯創(chuàng)造的， 他們這ー偉大創(chuàng)造一是經(jīng)廣大人民世代流傳下來(lái)，一是通過(guò)各種各樣的文獻(xiàn)保存下來(lái)。保存idioms最多的文獻(xiàn)當(dāng)推對(duì)現(xiàn)今西方文化影響較大的經(jīng)典著作。這些著作主要是:1) The Bible, 2) Writings by W. Shakespeare, 3) The Fables of Aesop,在英語(yǔ)國(guó)家這些著作的影響可說(shuō)不亞于《四書》、《五經(jīng)》對(duì)于我國(guó)文化的影響。人們至今常用的不少熟語(yǔ)最早記錄在這些著作中，但是很多人已經(jīng)不太清楚這一來(lái)源了?，F(xiàn)舉例如下：

A. Idioms from the Bible：

1. The days of our years are three-score years and ten。

我們一生的歲月是七十歲。(ef. “人生七十古來(lái)稀”）

2. the apple of the eye 眼珠 (ef. 掌上明珠）

3. hide one's light under a bushel (聯(lián)想:不露鋒芒）

4. new wine in old bottles 舊瓶裝新酒 

5. a dead dog廢物或無(wú)價(jià)值之物

6. eye for eye, tooth for tooth 以眼還眼，以牙還牙

7. between the devil and the deep sea進(jìn)退兩難；進(jìn)退維谷（在魔鬼與深海之間） 

8. escape by the skin of one's teeth 死里逃生；幸免于死 

9. hole and corner偷偷摸摸；鬼鬼祟祟

10. a broken reed壓傷的葦杖(不能依靠的東西或人)

11. entertain an angel unawares 于不覺(jué)察中招待了大使（聯(lián)想：有眼不識(shí)泰山）

12. much cry and little wool 叫得多，干得幾乎沒(méi)效果（聯(lián)想：雷聲大雨點(diǎn)小）

13. a lion in the way 攔路虎

14. Everyone for himself and the devil take the hindmost. 人人為自己，魔鬼抓到最后的。（聯(lián)想：人不為己，天誅地滅。）

15. kick against the pricks 以卵擊石；螳臂擋車

16. a fly in the ointment 一只老鼠壞了一鍋湯

B. Idioms from W . Shakespeare：

1. bay (or：bark at) the moon 對(duì)月亮吠叫（干徒勞無(wú)益的事）

2. What's done is done.事情干了就算了。 (聯(lián)想：既往不咎）

3. Murder will out (Truth will come to light). 紙包不住火（聯(lián)想：真相終將大白）。

4. strange bedfellows 同床異夢(mèng)

5. be hoist with one's own petard 用炸藥來(lái)炸翻自己(聯(lián)想:做法自斃）
