英語和漢語是屬于兩個不同語系的語言，二者之間存在很多差異，了解這些差異對于做好工程英語翻譯工作有很大的裨益。根據(jù)我們多年的教學(xué)和翻譯經(jīng)驗(yàn)， 我們把英漢之間的差異歸納為以下幾個方面：

1. 綜合性與分析性

英語屬于綜合性語言，其標(biāo)志為詞的曲折變化形式；漢語屬于分析性語言，主要靠“著”、“了”、“過”等助詞來表達(dá)不同的時間關(guān)系以及動作的進(jìn)展?fàn)顩r。例如：

1) Thus encouraged，they made a still bolder plan to build another bridge over the Huanghe River.

譯文：由于受到這樣的鼓勵，他們制定了在黃河上再修建一座橋梁的更大膽計劃。

2) Without the application of the new technology，suspense bridges over the valleys would have cracked or collapsed during the major earthquake，and many deaths and property losses would have been caused. 

譯文：如果沒有運(yùn)用這個新技術(shù)，這么大的地震中，峽谷上修建的吊橋肯定會斷裂或者坍塌，這會造成很多人員傷亡和財產(chǎn)損失。

2. 緊湊與松散

一般說來，英語句子結(jié)構(gòu)緊湊，有大量的連詞、介詞在句子與句子之間銜接；漢語句子結(jié)構(gòu)松散，句子與句子之間缺少連接成分。例如：

3) Now the integrated circuit has reduced by many times the size of the computer of which it forms a part, thus creating a new generation of portable PC.

譯文：現(xiàn)在集成電路成了計算機(jī)的組成部分，使計算機(jī)的體積大大縮小，從而產(chǎn)生了新一代的便攜式家用計算機(jī)。

4) A new kind of building material has been developed for the purpose that still taller buildings and longer suspense bridges can be built in any places.

譯文：一種新的建筑材料被研制了出來，這種材料可以使更高的大樓和更長的吊橋在任何地方修建。

3. 形合與意合

英語的各類語句的關(guān)系靠嚴(yán)密的句法來銜接，從而使句子達(dá)到渾然一體的效果，而漢語的語句不靠句法上的銜接，而是講究意會。例如：

5) The colors of the fences on both sides of the highway change from the bright yellow in the morning to the dark yellow in the evening.

譯文：高速路兩邊護(hù)欄的顏色變化多端，早上是鮮黃，到了傍晚則變成了深黃。

6) The narrow streets，poor-quality vehicles and many new drivers pose a great threat to the urban life and pedestrian's peace of mind.

譯文：狹窄的街道，質(zhì)量不高的汽車以及很多新手司機(jī)嚴(yán)重地威脅著城市生活，街道上的行人無不膽戰(zhàn)心驚。

4. 繁復(fù)與簡單

英語句子一般較長且結(jié)構(gòu)復(fù)雜，漢語句子一般較短且簡練。例如：

7) The employer will respond in writing to any request for clarification which is received more than 28 days prior to the deadline for submission of tenders and written copies of the response will be sent to all tenders who have picked up the tender documents.

譯文：業(yè)主在截標(biāo)28天前收到投標(biāo)者提出的澄清要求后，將以書面形式予以答復(fù)。該答復(fù)的書面復(fù)印件將被送至所有已獲得招標(biāo)文件的投標(biāo)者。
