美式英語中，“井字鍵”讀作“pound sign”或者“pound key”。有一種說法是“pound（磅）”來源拉丁語libra pondo，簡寫成lb以后很像“#”這個符號，所以就用“pound”來指代“#”。

但是“pound”在英式英語中是“英鎊”的意思。所以為了避免混淆，英國和澳大利亞地區(qū)將“井字鍵”讀作“hash”。
