英語中的名詞有單數(shù)和復(fù)數(shù)之分，但漢語中的名詞本身并無單復(fù)數(shù)。英語中的復(fù)數(shù)名詞譯成漢語時，一般情況下可不加數(shù)量詞，但有時卻必須譯出復(fù)數(shù)?？傊?，復(fù)數(shù)名詞的翻譯既要符合邏輯，又要符合漢語的習(xí)慣。
試看復(fù)數(shù)名詞誤譯的一個譯例：
Drugs used in the treatment of heart diseases can produce heart block.
[原譯] 治療心臟病的藥物能產(chǎn)生心臟傳導(dǎo)阻滯。
[改譯] 治療心臟病的某些藥物能產(chǎn)生心臟傳導(dǎo)阻滯。
[說明]本例中的drugs 一詞為復(fù)數(shù)名詞，這里不是泛指治療心臟病的任何藥物，而是指其中某些藥物，因此必須把這一名詞的復(fù)數(shù)譯出，以免造成誤解。
復(fù)數(shù)名詞的翻譯可以有這樣幾種處理方法：(1)一般可將單復(fù)數(shù)名詞同樣對待，不必譯出復(fù)數(shù)(例1?3)；(2)有時根據(jù)需要，應(yīng)將復(fù)數(shù)名詞譯出， 可在名詞前加上"有些”“各種”等(例4~6); (3)如果確知復(fù)數(shù)名詞的具體數(shù)量，可將這一數(shù)量譯出(例7?9)。
1. It is common to divide tumours into two main groups, benign and malignant.
通常將腫瘤分為兩大類，良性腫瘤和惡性腫瘤。
2. The medical workers first applied acupuncture analgesia in dental operations.
醫(yī)務(wù)工作者最早在牙科手術(shù)中應(yīng)用針刺鎮(zhèn)痛。
3. Infectious diseases may be classified into two types, conta?gious and non contagious,
傳染病可分為兩類，即接觸性傳染病和非接觸性傳染病。
4. Physicians have been working on this for a long time.
內(nèi)科醫(yī)生們對此進(jìn)行了長期的研究。
5. When the plants died and decayed, they formed layers of organic materials.
各種植物死亡腐爛后形成一層層的有機(jī)物質(zhì)。
6.  Scientists preferred to continue their work rather than rest on their achievement.
科學(xué)家們寧愿繼續(xù)他們的研究工作，而不是躺在他們的成就上。
7. The heart is slightly bigger than a fist, and lies between, the lungs.
心臟略大于一個拳頭,位于兩肺之間。
8. The primary functions performed by the blood are nutrition of tissues, transportation of waste, chemical and thermal coordination of the body and defense vs. infection.
