英漢兩種語言句法結(jié)構(gòu)的不同之處之正就是定語在句子中的位置。英語中，除一個或幾個單獨的形容詞、名詞或代詞作定語一般放在所修飾的詞前面外，大部分定語都是后置的，這個定語要么是短語，要么是從句；而漢語的定語一般都是前置，無論這個定語是詞、短語還是句子，而且定語往往不是很長。所以，有的語言學(xué)家認為，漢語句子是左限制性，作定語的成分不能太長；而英語句子則是右開放性，右邊可以有無數(shù)個定語從句。下面讓我們來看一下幾個英文句子及其譯文：

（1）This is the cat.

這就是那只貓。

（2）This is the cat that killed the mouse.

這就是那只捕殺了老鼠的貓。

（3）This is the cat that killed the mouse that ate the cake,

這就是那只捕殺了偷吃了蛋糕的老鼠的貓。

（4）This is the cat that killed the mouse that ate the cake that was put on the table.

這就是那只捕殺了偷吃了放在桌上的蛋糕的老鼠的貓。

（5）This is the cat that killed the mouse that ate the cake that was put on the table that is standing in the kitchen.

這就是那只捕殺了偷吃了放在廚房的桌子上的蛋糕的老鼠 的貓。

（6）This is the cat that killed the mouse that ate the cake that was put on the table that is standing in the kitchen that is at the back of the house.

這就是那只捕殺了偷吃了放在房子后部的廚房的桌子上的蛋糕的老鼠的貓。
