英語的情態(tài)動詞有很多，其往往具有自己的詞義，但并不完全，也不能單獨作句子的謂語，需要與動詞原形連用。在此我們所討論的僅限于科技英語中使用的情態(tài)動詞should的譯法。

should作情態(tài)動詞用時，其句子的主語人稱不限。主要用法和譯法如下:?

1. 表示義務、責任和必要性

should的這種用法通常可譯為“應該”、“應當”、“必須”等。如：

* Such systems should include a complete monitoring system of water flow tied into the central control station.

這樣的（滅火）系統(tǒng)還應包括ー個與中央控制站連接的完備的水流監(jiān)控系統(tǒng)。

* It was no more than fitting that all objects in the universe should have a natural place.

宇宙中所有物體都應有其自然位置，這條原理是再恰當不過了。

* The temperature of the lead should be such that it is just enough to produce satisfactory castings in a heat-stabilized mold.

鉛液的溫度要正好適宜于在熱穩(wěn)定的模具中鑄出合格鑄件。

2. 表示推測，可能性

常譯為“可能”、“該”。如：

* It should be completely possible for two metals to have exactly the same strength and hardness.

兩種金屬具有完全相同的強度和硬度是完全有可能的。
