另一個(gè)令翻譯人員頭痛的是不定數(shù)量詞，如“幾十個(gè)、數(shù)百個(gè)、數(shù)千個(gè)、數(shù)萬(wàn)個(gè)、成千上萬(wàn)個(gè)、幾十萬(wàn)、幾百萬(wàn)、幾千萬(wàn)、幾十億，約多少、多少左右、多少上下、接近多少”，等等。翻譯不定數(shù)量詞有兩大難點(diǎn)：一是漢語(yǔ)和英語(yǔ)不能完全對(duì)應(yīng)，漢語(yǔ)里有“十、百、千、萬(wàn)、十萬(wàn)、百萬(wàn)、千萬(wàn)、億、十億”等數(shù)量單位，而英語(yǔ)卻不都有對(duì)應(yīng)的單詞，沒(méi)有“萬(wàn)、十萬(wàn)、千萬(wàn)、億、百億”這樣的數(shù)量單位，需要分別譯成“ten thousand” (十個(gè)千）、“one hundred thousand”(一百個(gè)千）、“ten million”（十個(gè)百萬(wàn)）、“one hundred million” ( 一百個(gè)百萬(wàn)）、ten billion” (十個(gè)十億）。所以，在英漢對(duì)譯時(shí)，稍有不慎，就會(huì)差之毫厘， 失之干里。此外，還要特別小心，千萬(wàn)不要把“ million”誤作“billion”，這兩個(gè)單位僅有一個(gè)字母之差，即m與b，一旦出錯(cuò)，結(jié)果會(huì)相差100倍。下面介紹幾種翻譯方法：

 (—) 用“some, about, around... + 數(shù)詞”或 “X or so / more”這種結(jié)構(gòu)表示多少上下/左右，接近多少等不定數(shù)量詞，例如：

a. The average increase in the retail prices was around 5.2 per cent for the first 11 months.

今年前11個(gè)月的零售價(jià)格平均增長(zhǎng)百分之五點(diǎn)二左右。

b. The country's total import and export volume for the first months of 1992 was US$ 140.9 billion, an increase of about 20.2 per cent over the first 11 months of 1991.

1992年前11個(gè)月的進(jìn)出口總額為1 409億美元，比 1991年同期增長(zhǎng)大約百分之二十點(diǎn)二。

c. Among the projects each involving funds of 1 million yuan or more investments in the textile,...industries shot up 89.1 per cent and accounted for 24.1 per cent of total investment.
