另一個令翻譯人員頭痛的是不定數(shù)量詞，如“幾十個、數(shù)百個、數(shù)千個、數(shù)萬個、成千上萬個、幾十萬、幾百萬、幾千萬、幾十億，約多少、多少左右、多少上下、接近多少”，等等。翻譯不定數(shù)量詞有兩大難點(diǎn)：一是漢語和英語不能完全對應(yīng)，漢語里有“十、百、千、萬、十萬、百萬、千萬、億、十億”等數(shù)量單位，而英語卻不都有對應(yīng)的單詞，沒有“萬、十萬、千萬、億、百億”這樣的數(shù)量單位，需要分別譯成“ten thousand” (十個千）、“one hundred thousand”(一百個千）、“ten million”（十個百萬）、“one hundred million” ( 一百個百萬）、ten billion” (十個十億）。所以，在英漢對譯時，稍有不慎，就會差之毫厘， 失之干里。此外，還要特別小心，千萬不要把“ million”誤作“billion”，這兩個單位僅有一個字母之差，即m與b，一旦出錯，結(jié)果會相差100倍。下面介紹幾種翻譯方法：

 (—) 用“some, about, around... + 數(shù)詞”或 “X or so / more”這種結(jié)構(gòu)表示多少上下/左右，接近多少等不定數(shù)量詞，例如：

a. The average increase in the retail prices was around 5.2 per cent for the first 11 months.

今年前11個月的零售價格平均增長百分之五點(diǎn)二左右。

b. The country's total import and export volume for the first months of 1992 was US$ 140.9 billion, an increase of about 20.2 per cent over the first 11 months of 1991.

1992年前11個月的進(jìn)出口總額為1 409億美元，比 1991年同期增長大約百分之二十點(diǎn)二。

c. Among the projects each involving funds of 1 million yuan or more investments in the textile,...industries shot up 89.1 per cent and accounted for 24.1 per cent of total investment.
