例 2 The greatness of a people is no more determined by their number than the greatness of a man is determined by his height.

譯文：正如一個(gè)人的偉大不取決于他的身高一樣，一個(gè)民族的偉大也不取決于其人口多少。

在“no more ... than +從句/not ... any more than +從句”的結(jié)構(gòu)中，否定詞不但否定than前面的內(nèi)容，也否定than后面的內(nèi)容。事實(shí)上，than前面的內(nèi)容和它后面的內(nèi)容是同等意義上的否定句，且兩者構(gòu)成某種意義上的類比。因此，than后面的從句只能用肯定式，不能用任何否定詞。

在此順便談?wù)剝蓪?duì)否定短語 no more than 與 not more than, no less than 與 not less than 的譯法。not more than 相當(dāng)于 at most(至多），而 no more than 相當(dāng)于 only(只有）；而not less than可譯為“不下于”、“至少”、“不比……差”，no less than譯為“達(dá)…… 之多”、“和……一樣”。

例 3 The film is not instructive and interesting.

譯文：這部影片頗有教育意義，但是沒有趣味。

有人會(huì)把上句理解為“這部影片既無教育意義，又沒有趣味”。如果把原句中的and改為or，那么這種譯文是對(duì)的。我們?cè)诜g這種句子的時(shí)候要注意：當(dāng)and在…not ...and... 結(jié)構(gòu)中連接兩個(gè)狀語（或定語，或表語）的時(shí)候，與之搭配的not表示部分否定，即只否定 and后面的部分。
