In general, such attributives in Chinese are also placed before the words they modify as mentioned above. But in some particular cases, as in those sentences whose main clauses are of the "there is (or are)" pattern, either kind of word order —the attributives placed before the words they modify or the attributives placed after them sounds all right,e.g.


(1) But there are still people who have failed to memorize the lessons of the past.

(2) How many students are there in your class whose homes are in the countryside?


Compare the two Chinese versions of each of the original sentences in the following:


(1)但仍然有人沒(méi)有記取過(guò)去的教訓(xùn)。

        但仍然有沒(méi)有記取過(guò)去教訓(xùn)的人。


(2)你們班上有多少同學(xué)家在鄉(xiāng)下?

        你們班上家在鄉(xiāng)下的同學(xué)有多少?


Both versions are grammatical. Yet the former, the so-called pivotal sentence pattern, it seems, sounds more natural, and thus it is preferable.
