“借代”又叫“換名”、“代替”或“代稱”，是借用與所指事物(本體)有密切關系的另一事物(借體)來代替所指事物的一種修辭方式。
從通用的術語看，“借代”與前文探討的“借喻”共一個“借”字；另一方面，英語中與之對應的是metonymy或synecdoche,有的譯作“轉喻”、“換喻”或“提喻”，從這些譯名看，它同“借喻”又共一個“喻” 字。美國的James W. Fernandez曾概括說，二者的區(qū)別在于借代是同一范圍內(nèi)部的比較(comparing materials within domains)，而借喻是不同范疇之間的比較（comparing materials across domains)。筆者認為，它們的區(qū)別關鍵在于修辭作用的不同：借代強調的是“代”: 即用借體來“稱代”本體；借喻強調的是“喻”：即用喻體來喻指本體。
曹雪芹常常利用換稱借名的方式，以另一名字代替本名，將人物性格和事物特征一語點破，入木三分，使語言錯綜變化、形象生動，文筆簡潔精煉、含蓄有味，拓展了讀者想象和聯(lián)想的廣度和深度。那么，《紅樓夢》運用借代手法傳遞的藝術美感，是怎樣經(jīng)由譯者之筆，再傳予譯文讀者心目的呢？
1)孰謂蓮社之雄才，獨許須眉，直以東山之雅會，讓余脂粉。（第三十七回）
楊譯：
Why should the genius of the Lotus Society be confined to men? Why should girls be excluded from cultured gatherings like those in the Eastern Hills?
霍譯：
Why should the founding of poetry clubs be the sole prerogative of the whiskered male,and female versificators allowed a voice in the tunable concert of the muses only when some enlightened patriarch sees fit to invite them?
2)那些個須眉濁物，只知道文死諫，武死戰(zhàn)，這二死是大丈夫死名死節(jié)。（第三十六回）
楊譯：
Those vulgar sods believe that ministers who die remonstrating with the Emperor and generals who die in battler win immortal fame as fine,upright men.
霍譯：
Those whiskered idiots who take quite literally the old saw that“a scholar dies protesting and a soldier dies fighting”and get themselves killed off on the assumption that those are the only two ways in which a man of spirit can die gloriously，would do better to die in their beds.
3)今風塵碌碌，一事無成，忽念及當日所有之女子，——細考較去，覺其行止見識，皆出于我之上。何我堂堂須眉，誠不若彼裙釵哉？ (第一回）（由于兩個譯本所參照版本不同，該例無霍譯）
楊譯：
In this busy，dusty world,having accomplished nothing，I suddenly recalled all the girls I had known，considering each in turn，and it dawned on me that all of them surpassed me in behaviour and understanding； that I，shameful to say，for all my masculine dignity，fell short of the gentler sex.
“須眉”是男子的胡子眉毛；“脂粉”是女子的化妝用品；“裙釵”是女子的穿戴。作者在此以“須眉”替代男子，是以局部代整體；以“脂粉”和“裙釵”代女子，是以特征代本體。這些具體而實在的借代名稱，突出了所指代事物的特征，給讀者以生動的形象，不僅激發(fā)了讀者的情感，而且還表達了作者男女平等和女子勝過男子的進步思想。比直接說“男子”、“女子”更加新鮮活潑，感染力更強。
我們注意到這三個例句的不同譯文中，出現(xiàn)了 men，girls， female, masculine (dignity)這樣直言本體的意譯，和 gentler sex 這 樣帶有部分婉曲色彩的表達方式，以及whiskered male, whiskered idiots, vulgar sods這樣的對借體語義的直譯。事實上，以上三例的這些不同的翻譯方法，概括了兩譯本在借代辭格翻譯中體現(xiàn)出的基本特點。比如：
