(Treating Instructions Imparted by Precedent Masters)

黃帝日:余聞先師，有所心藏，弗著于方。余愿聞而藏之，則而行之，上以治民，下以治身，使百姓無(wú)病，上下和親，德澤下流，子孫無(wú)憂，傳于后世，無(wú)有終時(shí)，可得聞乎?岐伯日:遠(yuǎn)乎哉問(wèn)也。夫治民與自治，治彼與治此，治小與治大，治國(guó)與治家，未有逆而能治之也，夫惟順而已矣。順者，非獨(dú)陰陽(yáng)脈論氣之逆順也，百姓人民皆欲順其志也。

Yellow Emperor said:"I am told that the preceding masters had many personal understandings which were not recorded in the plate, and I hope to hear about these understandings. I will keep them with good care and will take it as the norm of my behavior to treat the people and myself, so that the people may be exempted from diseases, the people in the upper class and the lower class in the society may keep harmonious, to have kind relations and good will bet ween them, as love and kindness are prevailing among the people, their descendants will live peacefully without mental and physical disturbances and the good tradition may pass to the future generations without end. Can I hear about them?" Qibo said: "When one treats the people or himself, treats things which is nearby or far away, handles a trifle of a major task, manages a country or a family, the treating has always been a failure when the treating is in the reverse way, and one must only treat in the agreeable way. The so called agreeable way not only involves the conditions of the Yin and Yang channels and the Ying and Wei energies, but also involves the treatings which are agreeable to the wishes of the people."

黃帝曰:順之奈何?岐伯日:入國(guó)問(wèn)俗，人家問(wèn)諱，上堂問(wèn)禮，臨病人問(wèn)所便。黃帝曰:便病人奈何?岐伯日:夫中熱消癉則便寒，寒中之屬則便熱。胃中熱，則消谷，令人懸心善饑，臍以上皮熱;腸中熱，則出黃如糜，臍以下皮寒。胃中寒，則腹脹;腸中寒，則腸鳴飧泄。胃中寒，腸中熱，則脹而且泄，胃中熱，腸中寒，則疾饑，小腹痛脹[小腹痛脹:《太素》卷二《順養(yǎng)》“小”作“少”，“痛”下無(wú)“脹”字]。

Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat agreeably?"Qibo answered:"When one enters into a country, he must ask the condition of the local custom first; when one enters into a family, he must ask what are the taboos in the family first; when one wants to enter into the hall, he must inquire about the etiquettes of the host first; when treating, the physician must ask and know the various conditions of the patient and then ascertain which way of treating will be suitable." Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat in a suitable way?" Qibo answered: "When one has heat in the intestine and the stomach, he will consume a lot of food and has the Xiaodan syndrome, treating with drugs of cold nature will be suitable; when one has cold in the intestine and stomach, treating with drugs of hot nature will be suitable; when there is heat in the stomach, the cereals in it will be digested rapidly to cause one's heart like hanging and he is apt to get hungry; when there is hot feeling on the skin above the naval, it is because there is heat in the intestine, the patient will have thin stool like the gruel; when there is cold feeling on the skin under the naval, it is because there is cold in the intestine, the syndromes of borborygmus and diarrhea will occur; when there is cold in the stomach and heat in the intestine, the syndrome of getting hungry rapidly and distention of the lower abdomen will occur."

黃帝曰:胃欲寒飲，腸欲熱飲，兩者相逆，便之奈何?且夫王公大人血食之君，驕恣從欲，輕入，而無(wú)能禁之，禁之則逆其志，順之則加其病，便之奈何?治之何先。

Yellow Emperor asked:"When the stomach has heat, one should take the cold drinks and when the intestine has heat, one should take the hot drinks, as cold and heat are on the contrary, how should this kind of disease be treated? Especially, to the patients who are princes and nobles who always have meat in their meals, they are proud, indulge in their desires, look down upon others and can hardly be persuaded, when one advises him to treat against his opinion, it will oppose his will, if one treats agrecing with his will, the disease will become aggravated. In treating, what should one do first?"

岐伯日:人之情，莫不惡死而樂(lè)生，告之以其敗，語(yǔ)之以其善，導(dǎo)之以其所便，開(kāi)之以其所苦，雖有無(wú)道之人，惡有不聽(tīng)者乎?

Qibo answered: "Generally, everyone is afraid of death and prefers living, if the physician tells the patient what is beneficial and what is harmful to his body, shows him the proper way of treating which will benefit him and relieve his misgiving that causes hita miserable, he will not neglect your advise even if he is a somewhat unreasonable man."

黃帝日:治之奈何?岐伯日:春夏先治其標(biāo)，后治其本;秋冬先治其本，后治其標(biāo)。

Yellow Emperor asked: "How to treat it?" Qibo answered: "In spring and summer, treat the branch which is outside first, and then, treat the root which is inside; in autumn and winter, treat the root which is inside first and then, treat the branch which is outside."

黃帝日:便其相逆者奈何?岐伯日:便此者，食飲衣服，亦欲適寒溫，寒無(wú)凄愴，暑無(wú)出汗。食飲者，熱無(wú)灼灼，寒無(wú)滄滄。寒溫中適，故氣將持。乃不致邪僻也。

Yellow Emperor asked:"How to treat the patient with the contrary condition stated above and causes him to become appropriate?" Qibo answered: "When one treats to suit the patient's condition of this kind, keep the cold and heat moderate in his food and clothing. In clothing, when the weather is cold, put on thick clothes to avoid catching cold; when the weather is hot, wear thin clothes to avoid perspiration. In taking food and drink, avoid taking that of excessive heat and cold, but keep them in moderate temperature, in this way,the healthy energy can be maintained in the body so that the invasion of the evil energy which causes disease may be avoided."
