黃帝曰:《本藏》以身形支節(jié)?肉，候五臟六腑之大小焉。今夫王公大人、臨朝即位之君而問焉，誰(shuí)可捫循之而后答乎?岐伯曰:身形支節(jié)者，臟腑之蓋也，非面部之閱也。

Yellow Emperor said: "It was stated in the chapters of 《On Viscera》: 'The conditions of the five solid organs and the six hollow organs can be determined by the physique and by the sizes and shapes of the protruding muscles in the joints of the limbs. ' If a prince or the king wants to know the conditions of his viscera, how can one stroke his body and muscles before answering?" Qibo said: "The conditions of physique and the protruding muscles of the limbs are coincide with that of the viscera, but one can know them also by examining the face."

黃帝日:五臟之氣，閱于面者，余已知之矣，以肢節(jié)而閱之奈何?岐伯日:五臟六腑者，肺為之蓋，巨肩陷咽，候見其外。黃帝日:善。

Yellow Emperor said:"Now I have known the refined energy of the viscera can be examined from the physique and the face, but how to know the conditions of the internal organs by examining the joints?" Qibo answered:"Among the five solid organs and the six hollow organs, the lung is in the highest position and it is like a canopy, the condition of the lung can be determined by examining the high or low position of the shoulder and the condition of cave-in of the pharynx and larynx outside." Yellow Emperor said:"Good."

岐伯日:五臟六腑，心為之主，缺盆為之道，?骨有余，以候（骨曷）骺。黃帝日:善。

Qibo said: "In the five solid organs and the six hollow organs, the heart is dominating, and the supraclavicular fossa is the passageway, as the distance between the two ends of the shoulder bone is quite wide, it can be used to examine the location and the shape of the supraclavicular bone so that to know the high or low, firm or crisp condition of the heart." Yellow Emperor said: "Good."

岐伯曰:肝者主為將，使之候外，欲知堅(jiān)固，視目小大。黃帝日:善。

Qibo said: "In the five solid organs, the liver is like a general, it can be used to determine the symptoms outside of the body, when one wants to know the patient's health condition of liver, examine the brightness or dullness of his eyes. "Yellow Emperor said: "Good."

岐伯曰:脾者主為衛(wèi)，使之迎糧，視唇舌好惡，以知吉兇。黃帝日:善。

Qibo said: "The spleen is to defend the whole body, it receives the refined substance of the cereals and transports it to the various parts of the body. When one examine the appearance of the lips showing likes or dislikes, the good or bad condition of the spleen can be known." Yellow Emperor said: "Good."

岐伯曰:腎者主為外，使之遠(yuǎn)聽，視耳好惡，以知其性。黃帝日:善。愿聞之腑之候。

Qibo said: "The kidney dominates the water and body fluid which enables one to hear afar. When examining whether one's hearing is acute or not, the strong or weak condition of his kidney can be known. " Yellow Emperor said: "Good. " I hope to hear further about how to determine the conditions of the six hollow organs.

岐伯目:六腑者，胃為之海，廣骸、大頸、張胸，五谷乃容;鼻隧以長(zhǎng)，以候大腸;唇厚、人中長(zhǎng)，以候小腸;目下果大，其膽乃橫;鼻孔在外，膀胱漏泄;鼻柱中央起，三焦乃約。此所以候六腑者也。上下三等，臟安且良矣。

Qibo said: "In the six hollow organs, the stomach is like the sea which accommodates foods, when one's muscle of the cheek is plump, his neck is sturdy and his breast is unfolding, his ability of accommodating the cereals must be good. When one's nasal tube is long, it can be used to determine the large intestine. When the lips are thick and the vertical groove on the middle of the upper lip is long, it can be used to determine the small intestine. When the lower 'part of the skin under the lower eyelid is large, it shows his liver is wilfully despotic. When one's nostrils are turning up which can be seen outside, it shows his bladder is apt to become leaking. When one's nose-bridge is not flat, it shows that his triple warmer is normal. There are the methods of determining the conditions of the six hollow organs. In a word, when the upper and the lower sides of one's physique and face are matching, it symbolizes his internal organs are in harmony and are having normal functions.
