2. 對照并列句

(1) 含對照意義的并列句英語常用while,whereas來連接。

虛心使人進(jìn)步，驕傲使人落后。

Modesty helps one to make progress while conceit makes one lag behind.

(2)對照并列句也有ー些常用句式

A“不是……而是……”

水結(jié)冰時，體積不是變小，而是變大。

When water freezes, instead of being smaller in volume, it is evidently a case of being larger in volume.

不是車床出了毛病，而是他沒有學(xué)會操作。

It is not that the lathe is out of order，but that he has not mastered the skill of operating it .

這不是一套絕對的規(guī)則，而是對ー些傾向作的解釋。

It is not a set oi absolute rules but (rather) an explanation of tendencies.

B. 是……而不是

半導(dǎo)體是ー種不良導(dǎo)體，而不是良絕緣體.

The semiconductor acts as a poor conductor rather than a good insulator

評:翻譯時，一般按照原文語序，但有時要根據(jù)英漢的不同修辭習(xí)慣作些調(diào)整，如漢語習(xí)慣重要的先說，英譯習(xí)慣卻是最重要的放在后邊。

C. 不

我喜歡打排球，不喜歡踢足球.

I would rather play volleyball than football,

I would prefer to play volleyball rather than football.

I prefer volleyball to football.

中國人受漢語影響而選用的表達(dá)可能是I like to play volleyball. I don’t like to play football.上邊三個表達(dá)方式是最地道的。
