在以上六個小例中，operate —詞分別與漢語的十個詞義相對應(yīng)。諸如此類的英語多義詞多得不可勝數(shù)，而且有一些多義詞的詞義之多，令人吃驚。如run的詞義有上百種，而set的詞義更多（據(jù)統(tǒng)計，set作動詞用有120余種詞義，作名訶用有60 余種詞義）。漢語里決不可能找列任何一個詞可以包含如此眾多而又完全對等的含義。在這個意義上可以說，脫離上下文 的單個詞是不可譯的。
