According to the well-defined goal, in the next five years, the City of Toronto will reduce total carbon dioxide emissions by 20%, which is well above the 6% reduction target that Canada has committed to in the Kyoto Accord. The City has also determined that its reduction in fossil fuel will not only assist in reaching our environmental goals but also provide the City of Toronto with significant financial savings, as well as providing
economic spin-offs in creation of new jobs and encouraging investment in the development of alternative fuels.
The City established the Sustainability Round-Table to advise the City Council on the environmental impact of new legislation and policies. The Sustainability Round-Table includes representation from the environmental, business and social sectors of the community.
The City's other sectoral plans including the economic development plan, the official plan and the social plan are all guided by the "City's Strategic Plan" and address each other's priorities, so that the City's environmental objectives are fully addressed in all sectors of their operations.

The World Secretariat of the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) is located in Toronto and is supported financially by the City of Toronto. One of Toronto's City Councilors serves with a key position on the Board of Directors of ICLEI.
