1. 當(dāng)or連接兩個(gè)對等成分，如詞或短語，表示“選擇”概念時(shí)，可譯為“或”、“或者”等，或用漢語的頓號(hào)代替，或按漢語的習(xí)慣而譯。如：
* Gears are used to increase or decrease the speed and torque of shafts.
齒輪用來增大或減小轉(zhuǎn)軸的速度或轉(zhuǎn)矩。
* Thus work is done when a weight is lifted, or a spring is stretched, or a gas is compressed in a cylinder.
因而當(dāng)一重物被舉起時(shí)，或一彈簧被拉伸時(shí)，或氣體在氣缸中被壓縮時(shí)，也就做了功。?
2. 當(dāng)or連接兩個(gè)同義詞或同義短語，或同一事物的不同表達(dá)時(shí)，or可譯為“即”、“也就是”、“等于”等。如：
* Oxidized metals can be reduced, or separated from nonmetals, and in that way be made pure again.
氧化了的金屬可以還原，也就是可以和非金屬分離，從而又變成純金屬。
* Glass and rubber are non-conductors or insulators.
玻璃和橡膠是非導(dǎo)體，即絕緣體。
3. 當(dāng)or連接的短語表示讓步概念時(shí)，可譯為“不論”。如：
* The parts, square or rectangular, should be ground to fit the seat snugly in order to avoid leakage of the fluid.
這些零件，不論是方形的還是矩形的，均應(yīng)磨削使其與安裝座緊密結(jié)合，以防漏油。
